Summary

A USA Today best seller.

Captain Calli Chase races against time to thwart a plot that leaves the fate of humanity hanging in the balance in this new thriller from international best-selling author Patricia Cornwell.

In the aftermath of a NASA rocket launch gone terribly wrong, Captain Calli Chase comes face-to-face with her missing twin sister - as well as the startling truth of who they really are. Now, a top secret program put in motion years ago has spun out of control, and only Calli can redirect its course.

Aided by cutting-edge technologies, the NASA investigator and scientist turned Space Force pilot sets out on a frantic search for the missing link between the sabotaged rocket launch and her predetermined destiny…a search that someone else seems very interested in stopping.

From NASA to the Chase family farm, to the White House to distant orbits of space, Calli plays a high-stakes game of hide-and-seek with a cunning and ruthless adversary. One wrong move will unleash cataclysmic consequences reaching far beyond the boundaries of Earth.

This heart-pounding Captain Chase thriller from Patricia Cornwell will leave readers desperate for more.

Enjoyable

I thoroughly enjoyed the story and especially the performance. I found it enjoyable that the narrator gave different voices to the characters. Cornwell always tries to give a strong female character a great challenge, and definitely Captain Chase is put through her paces in this story.

Good Overall Story

Spoilt by too much over description which then causes me to lose focus on the story and needs to be listened again to.

"The future got here quicker than expected."

Ms.Cornwell is a fine writer, able to involve and trap her readers in much the same way the killers in her Scarpetta novels were able to toy with their victims. And all of her works are meticulously researched, like her personal investigation into the Jack the Ripper killings of Victorian London. And this book, second in the series, is no exception. Twin sisters are at the heart of this space-military-cyber-sci.fi story, groomed from birth to be special 'weapons' for the USA by both parents, a four star general (known as Dick) and who knows who else? working out of Langley and NASA. I think! It's all high powered stuff, even the President gets involved, and, of course, there is the leering face of evil in the form of a woman who always seems to get there first.I

In book one, a rocket had to be destroyed after a communications failure. The cyber war is, unknown to most, already in full flow and Calli and her daredevil (the attractive one) twin sister have to stop the next attack. Rather slow for the first half, but with some fun acronyms played out, like PEEPS and SPIES - extra special sun glasses and contact lenses - and the introduction of a super smart child and a temperamental AI, but the whole becomes stomach clenching thrilling as the test pilot takes to space: some great descriptions here. Narrator January le Vay is excellent, her voice melodious, pleasant in timbre and with good pacing and modulation. This is the sort of book I want to read twice, to fill in bits I missed first time round. And, left with a threat at the end, I can't wait for book three.

Not for me

Unfortunately far too different from historic Patricia Cornwell books, unrealistic, unnecessarily complex and not enjoyable.
