Summary

We live in an age of emergency, exacerbated by a collapse of meaning. Writer and psychotherapist Mark Vernon examines the type of intelligence that, whilst often dismissed and overlooked, is crucial to understand and cultivate if we are to survive and thrive in our times. Spiritual intelligence is the foundation of who we are and our particular type of consciousness. It is the perception identified across wisdom and religious traditions, and known by many names, which can be summarised as the awareness of awareness, and so of being itself. It is the foundation of peace, even in the face of death, as well as purpose and solidarity. The challenge today is to recover and live according to that knowledge. Examining themes from the nature of consciousness to the experience of time, the emergence of our species and the teaching of spiritual adepts, the book is an antidote to rampant AI and a complement to emotional intelligence. It is written without presuming religious commitments in readers and draws on a mix of sources and experience gained from the author's own practices. It advocates pilgrimage and improvisation, virtues over morality, and big histories that do not turn the story of our species into a bleak struggle for survival. The seven steps will help listeners identify spiritual intelligence within themselves, unpack why it matters, and suggest how a wider trust in it may be revived.

7 steps much better than 12 rules..

seems to me in one book Mark Vernon has eclipsed the self help book genre by approaching a profound subject from the ground. no pretensions of providing solutions or of being the final word on the subject it does however provide a fulcrum on which to see differently. way more rich and comprehensive than his trailers or the title might suggest. it feels like a fulsome, liberating and joyful gift.

Important for Humankind (and very enjoyable too)

It's hard to put words how important this book is; full of wisdom, warmth, insight, and spiritual intelligence. Ambitious and generous in its conception, honest and clear in its execution. I loved his depiction of the everyday experience of being alive with a connection to the spiritual commons (his walk to the shop to buy tomato soup), alongside his broader perspective on how to live. I found the first 2 chapters more challenging, so if this is the same for you, don't give up. I want to express my deep gratitude for the work Mark Vernon is doing in being part of the movement to bring this wisdom to the world. I'm going to listen all over again now.

A brilliant guide to reclaiming our humanity

In his new book Mark Vernon gently orientates us towards the possibilities for enriching and deepening our sense of what it is to be human. In the age of AI, ChatGPT and the like, this is an important and timely work. So much of our space has been encroached on, in the particulars of the UK, think of the enclosure Acts and access to the commons. Now humanity finds its self deep in the age of quantity where material measurement, control and domination seem the guiding principles. This movement, or dominate perceptual view, Vernon argues, has enclosed the spiritual commons so that access is actively mocked and discouraged, both directly and subtly. AI is the current unfolding Act of enclosure, as, the message is: whatever you might do is better done by ChatGPT, but the squeeze could also be a wake-up call. Where do we go to claim our humanity? In this brilliant book Mark Vernon shows as how to access the spiritual commons, a ‘territory’ that cannot be encroached by AI, or anything, if we allow ourselves to have the eyes to see.
