About this listen

Winter 1847, the Star of the Sea sets sail from Ireland for New York. Among the refugees are a maidservant, bankrupt Lord Merridith, an aspiring novelist, and a maker of revolutionary ballads. Each is connected more deeply than they know.

The details left me able to taste and smell this ship. I learned a lot of facts about the potato famine. Very disturbing. Beautifully written. A masterpiece.

Historical details about the travel to America from Ireland and the potato famine.

I did not know this writer, but I am impressed by this novel: its rich variety of characters and the details it provides of that particular period of history.

Spell-binding story.

Love the book. Utterly engaging. I did however question the choice of the narrator. His voice was smooth and enjoyable, his voice for the English characters was superb. However much of the book is narrating the voices and geographical place names of Ireland. The Irish accents were difficult to listen too, place names unintelligible and attempts at speaking Irish a concern to say the least. This undermines the book. It is not the narrators fault, it would be prudent in future to support narrators by employing an expert in the pronunciations of specific languages to enable them to do the book justice.

An epic!

I had been wanting to read this book for a long time and in the end chose the audible version so I could enjoy it while travelling in the car. It captivated me from the beginning to the end. Joseph 0'Connor is a genius. I felt like I was living the story at times, such was the depth of meaning. The narrator was a perfect choice, The best I have heard so far. I couldn't recommend it more

Excellent read, perfect narration

Intriguing, historical setting came to life slowly and built up to a revealing and touching look at lives as varied as an aristocrat, a nanny, a serf and a captain.

Intertwining stories

I loved this book. The narrator made the story come alive. It was truly thought provoking.

I really enjoy this book. A moving story that gives a good insight in to Connemara life in the 1830s tom 1850s and the great Connemara famines of that time. Holds your attention till the end.

Highly recommended.

A first class read

This is an astonishing book in every respect. The story is gripping, the characters multifaceted, the language glorious. How bitterly ironic that the theme of suppression of the Irish by English authorities is mirrored by the producers choice of an English actor to mangle the Irish language that is part of the narrative of this book. This recording cannot be said to be unabridged: The portion of the printed text that appears in the Irish language, whether written in English or Irish spellings, is absent. That is nothing short of a betrayal of the author and the readers

Linguistic imperialism
