About this listen

1960s Brighton, England... Crime reporter Colin Crampton must solve the mystery of some saucy seaside pictures if he’s to nail a murderer.

A gruesome murder on Brighton pier.

The girlfriend who’s held prisoner.

The reporter’s hunt to find her alive.

The nightwatchman is found murdered on Brighton’s Palace Pier. Colin Crampton thinks the killing is linked to the theft of a film from a What the Butler Saw machine. The saucy movie shows a nude woman bathing. Colin reckons if he can track down the thief, he’ll nail the killer.

Colin uncovers a 50-year feud between twin sisters–one a screen siren from the days of silent movies, the other the haughty wife of an aristocrat. But Colin’s investigation spirals out of control. And his girlfriend’s life is on the line.

“A highly entertaining mystery, narrated in a charming voice with winning characters.”–In Search of the Classic Mystery Novel

“A romp of a read. Very funny and very British.”–The Book Trail

I live near Brighton so was lovely to recognise places

The audio narrater kept saying "I said/she said/he said etc etc too many times, other than that it's a good storyline that keeps you interested, quite funny in places too.

Great 196s mystery

I have only recently been introduced to the Colin Crampton series by Peter Bartram and I am seriously hooked, I have read all ten of the 'Headline Hero' books and am now working my way through the audio versions as they are released.
In this story Colin, a crime reporter for a local paper in Brighton tries to 'scoop' his rivals when a night watchman is killed on the pier, he is convinced that the murder is connected to the theft of the pictures from a 'What the butler saw' machine also on the pier.
To keep the story on the front page and keep his editor happy Colin must find the connection and solve ethe mystery. His investigation leads to twin sisters who have led very different lives and have an old feud and a big secret. But there are lots of potential suspects and red herrings to side track him.
I love the characters, which are all so believable and well described, and in this audio version brought to life extremely convincingly by the narrator, who does a sterling job in interpreting and presenting the story.
Bring on the next book, I can't wait.
