About this listen

The unforgettable tale of an orphan in Victorian London, based on the boy whose plight inspired Dr Barnardo to found his famous children’s homes.

When his mother dies, Jim Jarvis is left all alone in London. He is sent to the workhouse but quickly escapes, choosing a hard life on the streets of the city over the confines of the workhouse walls.

Struggling to survive, Jim finally finds some friends… only to be snatched away and made to work for the remorselessly cruel Grimy Nick, constantly guarded by his vicious dog, Snipe.

Will Jim ever manage to be free?

Great listen

I don’t know why more people haven’t listened to this book. A great insight into Victorian times and the lives of people in poverty. Also great that it is based on Barbados- explaining how the charity was created by one single person. Definitely recommended.

An interesting story

I listened to this in one sitting (although I was gardening!) and found it interesting. I felt that the narrator was 4 star as, although she was very clear and measured, she could have injected a little more excitement into the exciting parts. overall, though, a good listen.

History lesson

Well I just had a great lesson about the life of children in days gone by, thank goodness for Dr Banardo, he must have saved so many children, it's amazing that it's still available now, well worth a listen
