Summary

In the modern world, qi is money.

The days of traveling martial artists and mountaintop masters are over. Power is controlled by corporations, modernized martial arts sects, and governments. Those at the bottom of society struggle as second class citizens in a world in which power is a commodity.

Rick may have survived the multitier tournament, but that doesn't mean his life will be easy. He finds the search for a better job is filled with traps and pitfalls, his sister is coming to terms with her dark power, and vendettas old and new plague them. This time, his journey will take him from the city to the wilderness....

Fun but possibly lacking a touch of depth

I really enjoyed both books in this series. I was in the mood for a lighter read so they suited perfectly. That being said, it could do with a little more depth. The mc faces set back after challenge after obstacle after test, and comes out the other side of each of them pretty much the exact same person and usually with no real consequences. It would have been interesting to see him fall for a temptation at some point or go too far in a fight and then deal with the fallout afterwards.

Good but not as good as the first one

This was a decent book. It doesn't have the pacing and sense of urgency that the first one had. The plot is a bit lacklustre with another gamified contest for some reason. Rick keeps elbowing people in the face. He continues to be unenthusiastic in his dating life.

The antagonist is just some guy who Rick has pissed off. It was seriously weak sauce and Rick never really approached the situation in a clever way.

I'm not sure if I'll read the final book. Baldree's narration was great and that might be what makes it worthwhile.
