Summary

No discussion of great modern authors is complete without mention of Cormac McCarthy, whose rare and blazing talent makes his every work a true literary event. A grand addition to the American literary canon, Suttree introduces readers to Cornelius Suttree, a man who abandons his affluent family to live among a dissolute array of vagabonds along the Tennessee river.

Critic reviews

Suttree contains a humor that is Faulknerian … and a freakish imaginative flair reminiscent of Flannery O’Connor.” ( Times Literary Supplement, London)

An incredible book with fantastic narration.

Richard Poe and McCarthy go together better than tequila & lime; a perfect combination. Great book and great narrator. 10/10.

Cormac McCarthy has his finger on the pulse of American everyday life in different social situations.

loved the narrator's voice, I thought it was perfect, and brought the characters to life

Perhaps my favourite Cormac novel....

Having read them all, and having a massive love for Blood Meridian, there's just something about this one which is more human. It still leaves me perplexed and wondering like his others, and the writing continues to be sublime, but it affected me in a greater way. Make up your own mind, but don't miss this from your reading/listening list. The narrator is also absolutely spot on, so much that I looked for others read by him. Don't pass this one by.

My Dad was just like this.

This book spoke to me because of the way in which it reflected some of the behaviours of my father. It was like his life story with all brilliance of his mind and all the hooks, crooks and ne’re do-wells that he hung out with, and which are everywhere, all of the time. A great book.

Captivatingly raw

McCarthy takes you to another place, an awful, grimy, dangerous place where you find tenderness and compassion.

A surprise

I did not know what to expect. The wall of words that greeted me did not deter. The story and the characters vividly described a world I will never know. I enjoyed the experience.

Wow - this really is something

What made the experience of listening to Suttree the most enjoyable?

I've tried reading this a couple of times and it's too much to take in off the page, the words come like a flood and are very small print! The audiobook made it much more digestible, and Poe is a terrific narrator. There are so many great characters in this book, so many great scenes, such vivid language and description, and the dialogue is (as you'd expect from McCarthy) full of warmth, humour, truth and brutality.

What other book might you compare Suttree to, and why?

I've never encountered anything-else like it.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If I could find a spare 20 hours then yes :)

Any additional comments?

One I'll definitely listen to again.
