About this listen

We are taken to peculiar lands where all the magical things that only seem to happen in dreams really do happen. We meet strange creatures by going the wrong way up a one-way street. We learn about what a peculiar muddle your presents can get into when your birthday cake is baked with a wishing spoon. And if you manage to save the king of grasshoppers from drowning in your soup, what wonderful rewards may come your way!

Entrancing!

Joan Aiken is a marvellous writer whose imagination is boundless. Although I am nearly 60 I bought this for myself and listen to a part of it in bed at night to help me sleep. I use the timer facility so that it stops after 30 minutes, but I never hear the end because I am asleep before then! This is not a criticism, it is actually lavish praise. The images she brings to life are so well drawn that it reminds me of being read to in bed as a child. Very comforting. The writers target audience, children, would love this book as much as I do. Of that I am sure. I have bought two other audio books from this author and use them in the same way. Maybe more insomniacs should try it.
