Summary
Bow Street Magistrates Court is justly famous as the birthplace of an efficient system of summary jurisdiction. Less well-known are some of the fascinating characters who have taken part in the court's dramas over the years. Most people know of the early pioneer stipendiary magistrates Henry and John Fielding. But what of Nicholas Bond, the ambitious and devious Bow Street Runner who (under John's patronage) became a clerk of the court and later a Bow Street Magistrate? And what of the 'noted highwayman Hawke', who had escaped prison in 1774 and now terrorised the wealthiest Londoners? Not to mention Mary Scroote, who brutally felled the man who refused her advances.
At the turn of the 19th century, Bow Street took on a legally armed Britain.
Tales from Bow Street is a gripping narrative of the history of London’s policing. Join Joan Lock as she delves into the criminal underworld of 18th-century London, a city riddled with pickpockets, prostitutes, highwaymen and murderers.
From the hanging murders of the 1700s through to Cold War espionage and the birth of the 1950s policewoman, Lock’s book is rich in periodic detail, listenable history and enlightening anecdotes.

Okay
Some interesting information but the narration and poor editing made for difficult listening and so, unusually, after really trying to persevere, I gave up at chapter 19. I think that this is a book for reading rather than listening to. The long-winded, language of the age and the multitude of people in the book would be easier to follow if I was able to quickly look back and re-read sections.

Historical voices
Poor performance - no performancee at all! Narrator just seemed to be reading the text aloud. Liked the breadth and the various voices and quotes. A broad sweep of the times covered, from it's inception to the present day and the reasons for existance.

Good start
This book was great to start with. A great insight into the life of a magistrates court in the 1800s. By the end it seemed quite rushed, jumping between 1800s to 1900s. Become quite boring by the final chapter.

interesting ramble from the early days of the Poli
The title led me to believe that this would be a history of the Bow Street Runners as the forerunner to the establishment of a London and then national police force. Instead is a somewhat ramble but establishmenting of brief stories loosely related to Bow Street, very little context so I struggled to find the flow of the book, the stories were interesting so I stuck with it and generally enjoyed it.
However I really struggled with the narrator's many verbal typo's, missing the emphasis words at the end of the sentence thus altering the sentence, plus a couple of instances of repeating sentence and a few bizarre pronunciations for example 'The Fenny-iums' rather than Fenians! I'm sure the author would be frustrated that verbal typo's and poor pronunciation impacts on an otherwise interesting book
