About this listen
Solomon Pace - Cold-blooded killer? Depraved evil sadist? A man just trying to make his way in the world? Or just deeply misunderstood? Of all my characters, Solomon Pace has to be one of the most complicated, but least understood.
In the "Storm Series" novels, he is always in the shadows, manipulating people and situations, and when he does come into the light, it is only to perform some dastardly deed before returning back into the inky gloom to continue his plotting.
With Tales of Solomon Pace, I knew straight away that I wanted to delve deeper into the background of the man and to give the listener glimpses of Solomon's past. To that end, I've produce a range of stories which will show different aspects of Solomon Pace, and give the listener additional insight to this very complicated and intriguing character. It also includes the Worldreader chosen story - "The Deadly Tap of a Cane".

Fantastic!
‘You forgot who you were talking to. I am Solomon Pace and I heal fast. I am Solomon Pace and my mind is mine to control.’
I haven't read the other books in the Storm Series yet, but after listening to Tales of Solomon Pace, I'm going to pick up the other books as soon as I can! [Some of the stories herein take place before some of the other books, so it may help to read Echoes of a Storm, etc, first! That said, I didn't have trouble settling into the different stories of Solomon and it's left me very intrigued to dive into the series from the start.]
This was a wonderfully narrated collection of tales that draws you straight into Scott's rich, fantastical world, with a focus on the character of Solomon Pace. You're told from the onset that Solomon is unforgiving and brutal, but you still want to learn more about him, about why, and follow along for the journey. Scott's descriptions are so evocative and really set the scene, and the prose is as lush as it is dark.
Interestingly, the book reminds me of a book of fairy tales - the old kind - but unlike most fairy tales there's a central figure throughout these stories and he's certainly not the one who needs saving. The audiobook makes for such easy listening, too. I'm extremely picky with narrators and I really enjoyed this one! I am also absolutely obsessed with the artwork for this book (and the others in the series!).

The villainous hero
They say every villain is a hero of his own story and after listening to Echoes of a Storm I was curious about Solomon Pace, the clever villainous villain who despite being able to crush bones and rip people's hearts out with a thought still spent so much time and energy behind the curtain, manipulating entire kingdoms to suit his machiavellian and mysterious agenda.
I was not disappointed. With each story we learn a bit more about Solomon and how he became the way he did. Some tales are dark and humorous, others are brutal and thought provoking, all working together to bring this character to life and let us glimpse into the grand scheme of things at work in this grim world of monsters.
The narration improved considerably since Echoes and worked well with the characters and tone of the stories.
I recommend this to any fan of dark fantasy who is not easily offended and appreciates unapologetically flawed characters.

Good stories told excellently
As my first experience with an audio book I would like to split this review in two, the story/ the format.
The story.
I have not heard of the characters before but picked this up free in return for an honest review.
It’s very well written with fantastic world building along themes we generally know about in fantasy. As the stories went along I felt I got to know Solomon really well considering I hadn’t read anything else from this author. I may look to downloading more as enjoyable, adult enough for my taste and just generally interesting. As I say may do as that leads me into the format.
Audio
The performer was top notch and once you get over the different accents it’s easy going, if I ever get to take another long haul flight I will look to not only use this but this author as well.
Some thoughts
1. It’s was 9 hours of listening, no way if I read it would it be that long, and upon seeing that it’s a bit daunting
2. Not sure how it works with more characters, how many accents could be done before it got silly
3. The female to male voices worked, how would a male doing female sound, again unsure.
There’s my thoughts, overall great story told expertly

A great introduction to the main series
I rarely read short story collections, but Tales of Solomon Pace was recommended to me as an introduction to the main series. That recommendation was spot on as this book adds extra flavour to the series. Solomon Pace is a compelling character who brings a playful malice whenever he enters.
The narration was flawless. Cari Scholtens brought the characters to life and provided a pleasurable listen.
Overall, though not necessary, this book is a good place to launch into the main series. You get a good introduction to the story world and a grounding in some of the main characters.
