Are killers made, or are they born?
When lawyer Ian Michaels is drawn into a sensational murder case to represent a killer, he is compelled to find the answer to this question. His client, Kenny Johnson, looks like a normal 16-year-old on the outside, but Ian wants to know what drove the young man to kill.

Unfortunately, the blurb was misleading. There is a legal case, that of a teenager being charged with multiple murder, but the book is mostly concerned with a divorce lawyer, Ian Michaels, who takes on the criminal defense, his own anger issues and his cheating on his wife of 20 something years with his secretary. Had this aspect been entwined into his attempts to find out why the youth had committed the crimes of which he was accused - there was never a doubt in his defence lawyer's mind that he did it - that would have been fine. But it was the other way around. The case of murderous youth and his background being mostly a mere vehicle to carry the story of the lawyer's infidelity, his angsting over his feelings, his occasional guilt and his apparent solution to everything: go out for a good meal with one of his women or a big breakfast with a friend
Had this book been reduced in length by around four hours, it could have been interesting and thought provoking. As it is, it becomes mostly the internal justifications of a thoughtless, self satisfied middle aged man (who loves his wife, mother of his three children, but is no longer 'in love' with her - so that's all right then!) to continue a long term affair which hurts both of the women in his life. Some readers will obviously enjoy this. Sadly, this reader is not one of them.
Narration by William Reece was good, if a little downbeat, unsurprising given the story line, but he followed the text well, injecting emotional emphasis where this was most needed.
This is not a bad book, merely miss advertised. I expect that many will find it absorbing as every little introspective guilt, self recognition and past recollection is repeatedly squeezed out of Michaels. But for those looking for a good legal thriller will have to dig deep to find it here.
