Summary
Master Sergeant Gant Maker was a highly decorated and well-respected marine - until his last mission left him as the sole survivor of an encounter with a vicious race called the Vacra. Served up as a scapegoat and drummed out of the military, he has since lived a life of seclusion with only an adopted alien as a companion.
Now the Vacra have returned. As the only person to have ever faced them and survived, Maker is reinstated in the corps and given the onerous task of finding this enemy on a world located at the edge of known space. Assisting him is an unlikely band of military rejects, including a blind sharpshooter, an unstable psychic, and a genetically engineered killing machine who refuses to fight.
Given that the Vacra have superior weapons and technology, Maker recognizes that his team is at a distinct disadvantage. But marines are nothing if not resourceful, and Maker has an audacious plan that just may level the playing field - if it doesn't get them all killed.

Great book want to read the next one right now!
Loved this book. Some space combat novels are just about that combat. This novel has politics and suspense. Really loved the second main character who is definitely not a pet!

Better than expected
A good military SF tale. Let down slightly by some cardboard characters, but I got over those quickly.

Entertaining
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
This was really entertaining. I was compelled to read it in one sitting which is unusual for me on an audiobook of this length. I loved the interaction between the main character and his crew.
The narrator was slightly slow and he mispronounced a couple words, but this was easily looked over (and listened to on 2x speed) as he characterised so well.

Out of this world
Wow, just wow. This is a brilliant book, I enjoyed it so much. If all books in this genre are like this then I might have to change from mystery to contemporary sci-fi books as it grabs you from the start and doesn't let up.
A soldier discredited from the marines after a mission went horribly wrong is called back into service when a vicious race called the Vacra return to reek havoc on a fringe world. Master Sergeant Gant Maker being the only person to have survived an encounter with them puts together a rag tag team of marines to fight them. Each flawed or damaged in some way and usually pasted over by commanding officers his team must use there own personal skills to band together to survive.
With so much action, adventure, twists, turns, quirky but loveable characters it has something for every one. It is a story I will happily listen to again and I can't wait for book two.
The narrator was exceptional and I love his wide use of voices for the different characters, making it a pleasure to listen too. I hope he sticks with the series and reads the next book.

An Excellent Start
A duty hardened Sargent abandoned by those who he trusted and served ,along with an unusual alien companion are tasked with a mission which may be the redemption he is looking for. Along with the usual skilled misfits his job is to track down a unusual alien species which may be a grave threat to humanity.
The story is quite slow to start and mainly involves lots of background and scene setting but when it comes in soon makes up for it.
The story its self has some nice twists and is of a good length to get your teeth into, narration itself is as always excellent by mikael and helps character and story flow nicely.
At the end i did find myself ready to jump into the next story which is always a great sign of a job well done.
This audio was given to me in exchange for an honest review and as such is my own opinion.

I want an Erlin
“I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.”
I said yes to reviewing this because I can never get enough really good, military style, Science Fiction stories, and I had never read anything by this author,so thought it worth trying. I am so glad I did, it was a wonderful story and I hated having to pause it to go to bed. I really liked the realistic feel to the military aspects and the aliens were all well thought out. In fact after Maker my favourite Character was his alien sidekick. As for the narrator, I truly loved his style and all the distinctive Character voices he used, he really brought the story to life.
I noticed that there was a book 2 on audible and, as soon as I have a new credit, I am probably going to buy it so that I can see what kind of adventure the author and narrator are going to take me on next.

Worth a Listen. Is there a sequel?
Story and Plot
Kevin Hardman does a good job the story is well written, well paced, the characters reactions are believable and the events are interesting. Never was I waiting for the book to get on with it or unclear about what was going on.
The story moved on and as things happen we find out more about what is going on. Even the things that are surprising feel like they fit and were true before we find out about them and not just pulled from a hat.
With out spoiling anything this could be the start of an epic series of books. it does a great job introducing the basics of the setting, the events, characters and foes. It feels like it would make a great pilot for an TV show or film.
Cast
An main group is an interesting cast with mixed backgrounds, personalities. This group of characters have potential I would like to have more opportunities to see them interacting. if you like Science Fiction books about a small military team of misfits and odd balls you should be more than happy with them.
Narration
As with all good narrators Mikael Naramore portrays the characters with distinct voices lending them emotion and motivation enhancing the story beyond the mere written words. I would be happy to listen to more books with the same narrator.
Summery
Worth giving a go. I am more than happy with the hours I spent listing to this book and if there was a sequel out right now I would be listening to in now instead of writing this.

A brilliant narrator and story!
What did you like best about this story?
I liked everything about this story. I love Sci fi so I thought I'll give the book a go since I have not read/listened to anything by this author. I am so glad that I did! I was hooked from the beginning.
It was slow to begin with, as there was no action, however this did not put me off. Actually the revise happened, I wanted to hear what was going to happen next.
There were twists in the book that I was not expecting. Yes there were one or two holes in the story however this did not put me off.
My favorite character has to be sergeant maker. I found him to be funny at times, loyal, courageous and intelligent.
Would recommend this book to those who love scifi with action/adventure.
What does Mikael Naramore bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
The narrator is one of the best that I have listened to. He suited this book really well. He bought out the characters, I felt I was listening to different people. I couldn't stop listening to this story. I felt it went quite quickly. I shall be listening to this narrator in the future.
Any additional comments?
