About this listen

A pretty young girl has to leave home to make money for her family. She is clever and a good worker; but she is uneducated and does not know the cruel ways of the world. So, when a rich young man says he loves her, she is careful - but not careful enough. He is persuasive, and she is overwhelmed. It is not her fault, but the world says it is. Her young life is already stained by men’s desires, and by death. An Oxford Bookworms Library reader for learners of English, adapted from the Thomas Hardy original by Clare West.

just the right length!

Reading this for our book club but didn't fancy this rather cheerless story unabridged so this was just right length and read well. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

Shaggy dog ending

The narration was excellent and I'm glad I listened to the abridged story because it was such a desperate story. Poor Tess. It's the kind of story that makes you depressed.
