Summary

You'll never see leadership the same way again after reading this book.

These 15 commitments are a distillation of decades of work with CEOs and other leaders. They are radical or provocative for many. They have been game changers for us and for our clients. We trust they will be for you, too.

Our experience is that unconscious leadership is not sustainable. It won't work for you, your team, or your organization in the long term. Unconscious leadership can deliver short-term results, but the costs of living and leading unconsciously are great.

Fear drives most leaders to make choices that are at odds with healthy relationships, vitality, and balance. This fear leaves a toxic residue that won't be as easily tolerated in an increasingly complex business environment.

Conscious leadership offers the antidote to fear. These pages contain a comprehensive road map to guide you to shift from fear-based to trust-based leadership. Once you learn and start practicing conscious leadership, you'll get results in the form of more energy, clarity, focus, and healthier relationships. You'll do more and more of what you are passionate about and less of what you do out of obligation. Your team will get results as well. Drama and gossip will all but disappear, and the energy and resources that fueled them will be redirected towardsinnovation and creativity.

Any one of these commitments will change your life. All of them together are revolutionary.

What do you need to bring to the table?

Be curious.

Sounds so simple, yet in our experience it's a skill few have mastered. Most of us are far more interested in being right and proving it than we are in learning, growing, and shifting out of our old patterns. By default we gravitate toward the familiar. We're asking you to take a chance and explore the unfamiliar.

Very helpful book

Very helpful book. Lots of food for thought and suggestions that could be put into practice. It would be great if it is updated to reflect some of the conditions we find each other into nowadays e.g. how does a conscious leader navigate culture wars and polarising positions on matters that were not so divisive 10 years ago.

Transfomative

Overall very insightful material. I sometimes felt there were too many details in just one book, but in any case this book changes me in a good way.

No compelling insights

Listened to this book on a recommendation but tapped out around 3 hours in. If you enjoy listening to the same leadership advice recycled 15 different ways, you’re in for a treat. The 15 commitments? More like 15 ways to say "don’t be a jerk" with extra steps. Imagine attending a leadership seminar run by your overly earnest yoga instructor – lots of deep breathing and feelings, but not much practicality.

Seriously, the whole book can be summed up in 30 seconds: be aware, be honest, appreciate people, and don’t gossip. Boom, you’re now a conscious leader! Do yourself a favor and skip this one unless you need a new insomnia cure or enjoy paying for life advice you already got from your grandma. Save your brain cells and thank me later.

Overly theoretical and impractical

15 rules to follow, while actually there are only 3 main rules and then 12 exceptions that are needed in order to patch all the holes in the first 3 rules. Overall very impractical book to be used in day to day with a few exceptions where the authors are just starting something that’s very obvious.
