Summary

A young witch must choose between love and loyalty, power and ambition, in this magical novel set in Gilded Age New York and London.

In 1692, Bridget Bishop was hanged as a witch. Two hundred years later, her legacy lives on in the scions of two very different lines: one dedicated to using their powers to heal and help women in need; the other, determined to grasp power for themselves.

This clash will play out in the fate of Annis, a young woman in Gilded Age New York who finds herself a pawn in the family struggle for supremacy. She'll need to claim her own power to save herself - and resist succumbing to the darkness that threatens to overcome them all.

Critic reviews

"Thoroughly enthralling."(Booklist)

"A must-read for those who like magic, love, and a little bit of feel-good feminism in their historical fiction." (Library Journal)

"An Austen-esque romance, a heart-racing mystery full of dangerous twists and an anxiety-inducing yet enthralling family feud, Louisa Morgan's The Age of Witches is anything but a traditional tale of good versus evil." (BookPage)

Absolutely Excellent!

Late 1800’s - New York. Annis’ dream has always been to breed horses, however this ‘does not befit a lady’ and therefore her family, rich with new money wish to take her to English and to marry her off to a man of title to raise their prowess in the upper echelons of society. Little does Annis know, there are much stranger forces at play and around her a battle silently begins to commence.

A beautifully written tale of the power struggle between good and evil within the witching community. Harriet, an experienced witch, is the only one who can protect Annis from the nefarious use of magic and teach her to protect herself. Will those who wish to use witchcraft for good prevail over those who simply wish to use it for more and more power?

I absolutely loved this! I did not realise this was the 3rd in the book series until halfway through and although it did not affect my enjoyment of the book, I will certainly go back and listen to the earlier works.

The narrator gives an excellent dramatic reading full of emotion and with well distinct voices. She is perfect for this book and really brings it to life.
