Summary
The award-winning His Dark Materials trilogy is a breathtaking epic adventure spanning a multitude of worlds. In The Amber Spyglass, the third and final installment, the war between good and evil reaches a shattering conclusion.
Lyra and Will are helped by friends old and new as they continue their perilous journey. The great armoured bear lorek Byrnison reappears, as does Dr Mary Malone, creator of the amber spyglass. Then there are the tiny, dragonfly-riding Gallivespians, and the wheel-borne Mulefa with their ability to see the mysterious substance Dust.
As childhood slips away from them, Lyra and Will face new dangers, including the daemon-destroying Spectres and a journey into the world of the dead. The pair must play their part in the climax of a war for the future of all worlds.
The Whitbread Book of the Year 2001, The Amber Spyglass is now an exciting BBC Radio 4 full-cast drama starring Terence Stamp, Ray Fearon, Emma Fielding, and Philip Madoc.

Confusing
Plot was hard to follow, too much going on in too short a story so was very confusing at times. Some of the actors sound effects were a bit peculiar and made us laugh rather than add to the effect. Shame as we were really looking forward to part 3.

Lovely but incomplete?
The acting is quite good and I had no trouble following the action but I have read the books and I believe it is missing some scenes, which I was a little disappointed about.

Better for kids than grown-ups
The third book came out a while after the first two, and feels different in tone. It's less about Lyra and Will stumbling their way around the worlds, and more about things happening, building to the climax and the prophecy that's been promised all series.
Sadly, I found much of the climax unsatisfying. There are key characters we learn little about, and who feel more like sketches than real people; and the final prophesied event was, for me, a bit of a non-event. Still, it was an enjoyable listen, and I had a nice time finishing the series.

Good performance but lacking content
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I have read the original book and found this version lacking what I consider important parts of the original story.
Compare it to the film version of a book, always missing some of the story and most of the time a little bit of a let down
Have now purchased the original book in audio to complete my collection instead.
This may be good for my grandchildren to listen to as dramatised tends to hold their interest longer

The Amber Spyglass (Dramatised)
Absolutely gripping and stretching your imagination beyond the realms of reality. At times the plot was a little far fetched and confusing, I still can't believe that Mrs Kulter became a human being at the end, but it made you think about our creation and the creator. A big tip is to listen to the books in the correct order as I started Amber Glass before Subtle Knife and realised something was wrong! Brilliant book and excellent production very believable that you feel you are there with Lyra and Will. The ending was unexpected but eventful.

A massive disappointment.
I listened to the first two books in the His Dark Materials series and was transfixed - listening to hour after hour of superb dramatisation and a tightly knit abridging. I downloded The Amber Spyglass expecting an at least as good experience and possibly better because the story was coming to a conclusion.
What. A. Disappointment. It was barely over 2 hours in length with bored people reading boring lines. Huge tracts of story were brushed over in sentences and it seemed like it was a rushe job.
Quick quick lets knock this out in 10 minutes because something more interesting is coming up next. I feel like the whole series has been tainted by the weakness of the treatment of the final book.
Money back please...

So abridged it doesn’t make sense
This is one of my favourite books and I’ve read it many times but listening to this version was so difficult to follow as it was so edited. After the 2 hours of dramatisation it was over and I was left wondering where the rest of the book was. Good character voices for the most part but very badly put together and really doesn’t give a sense of how amazing this book is. Very disappointing
