About this listen

For over 50 years, Britain's most popular radio drama has captured the imagination of listeners throughout the country. Ambridge and its residents have been constant companions to millions throughout the highs and lows of five successive decades.

Covering the years 1968 to 1986, Joanna Toye's novel follows the fortunes of Dan and Doris's grandchildren, as they search for happiness and love in the changing world of the 70s and early 80s. Jennifer's struggles as an unmarried mother look to be over with marriage to the gorgeous Roger, but a happy ending is not to be. Lilian has her share of tragedy with the death of her first husband Nick and illness of her second, Ralph. There is happiness for Shula, though, with new-found love Mark Hebden and Tony is lucky to meet Pat.

The romantic ups and downs of the Archer children form a gripping saga in this abridged reading by Stella Gonet.

As a fan of the radio drama, I have really enjoyed both this book and the previous one in the series. So enjoyable, and the backstory aspect has been a definite bonus.

Totally awesome

Mad about the Archers so really looked forward to this listen. However, the story jumps around a bit and there were a few times I though I missed have missed something, but hadn’t. A reasonable listen but only that, not really a great must for major archers fans.
Good narration though.

Reasonable

This book has been brilliant because with such ease I have been able to hear about the background to many of the dramas the Archer family has been faced.

I have listened to the 'Archers' for 20+ years off and on! This catch up is great, some info I have not known about till now, what revelations! Even some of the accents are the same as in the programme.

Well worth a listen.

Archers addicts will be pleased

Very disappointed with both the story and the appalling narration. The accents were dreadful, truly awful.
I bought this and Family Ties to catch up on some background to The Archers under Lockdown. Miriam Margolyes was wonderful & I was so disappointed she didn’t narrate the next one. I will send it back because it just wasn’t worth the credit. The story also didn’t make sense Pat doesn’t have a Welsh accent now & there’s no reference to her being Welsh! It was depressing didn’t do the present characters justice. Overall, very dull!

Quite poor really compared with the last Archers book Family Ties read by Miriam Margoyles
