Summary

Bloomsbury presents The Assassin's Blade by Sarah J. Maas, read by Elizabeth Evans.

The twist of a knife. The birth of a legend.

Step into the world of the #1 bestselling Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas with this collection of prequel novellas.

Celaena Sardothien is her kingdom’s most feared assassin. Though she works for the powerful Assassin’s Guild and its scheming master, Arobynn Hamel, she yields to no one and trusts only her fellow killer-for-hire, Sam. But when Arobynn dispatches her on missions that take her from remote islands to hostile deserts, Celaena finds herself acting independently of his wishes and questioning her own allegiance.

If she hopes to escape Arobynn’s clutches, Celaena will have to put her faith in her wits and her blade ... knowing that if she fails, she’ll lose not just a chance at freedom but her life.

A prequel to the New York Times bestselling Throne of Glass, this collection of five novellas explores the history of this cunning assassin and her enthralling — and deadly — world.

Included in this volume:

The Assassin and the Pirate Lord

The Assassin and the Healer

The Assassin and the Desert

The Assassin and the Underworld

The Assassin and the Empire

Prequel to throne of glass series

Great set of novellas that take place before the 1st throne of glass book. I would recommend listening to this first as a prequel since it features a few side characters that are important to the later books in the series. Fantastic narrator although there were some random strange accents but then you can tell it’s a different character speaking. Highly recommend.

It's better than the rest of the series

I had not read any of the series prior to this so thought I'd start with the prequal. This book is far superior to the next in the sequence. I was waiting for things to link in the next novel but its like the MC was striped of any and all fighting ability and personality and the characters went from fleshed out here to little cardboard cut out versions of themselves so I'd not recommend doing things the way I tried as it just made the Throne of Glass unbareable. It's such a shame as I was so enthralled by this book and the characters had really lovely dynamics.

First audiobook and was not disappointed!

Loved the narration style. The voices took a little getting used to as it was my first audiobook but I really loved it. Was a great way to take up a 6 hour drive!

Celaena Sardothien grows on you

This is a hard book to rate because it is a compilation of several short stories, and some are much better than the others. The stories follow Celaena Sardothien from being "just" an assassin to trying to make a difference and learning that no good deed goes unpunished. " The Assassin and the Pirate Lord" was good, but it took me some time to get interested in the story. "The Assassin and the Healer" is unremarkable, but I loved "The Assassin and the Desert". I wanted to know more about Sam at this point, and the remaining stories "The Assassin and the Underworld" and "The Assassin and the Empire" gave me what I asked for. The last one is heartbreaking and quite good, I read it the fastest. It paves the way for the series and makes me want to read "Throne of Glass" as soon as possible. It doesn't start strong but the ending is powerful, what a wonderful opening to the series.
