About this listen
The Black Angel is not an object. The Black Angel is not a myth. The Black Angel lives. A young woman goes missing from the streets of New York. Those who have taken her believe that nobody cares about her, and that no one will come looking for her. They are wrong. She is 'blood' to the killer Louis, the man who stands at the right hand of private detective Charlie Parker, and Louis will tear apart anyone who stands in the way of his attempts to find her. But as Louis's violent search progresses, Parker comes to realize that the disappearance is part of an older mystery, one that is linked to an ornate church of bones in Eastern Europe, to the slaughter at a French monastery in 1944, and to the quest for a mythical prize that has been sought for centuries by evil men: the Black Angel.
Yet the Black Angel is more than a myth. It is conscious. It dreams. It is alive. And men are not the only creatures that seek it…

White knuckle joyride to depths of hell! (&back)
Highly recommended!! Top notch thriller with a great range of characters throughout it's dark, gritty, esoteric storyline. Fine as a stand alone novel as not really reliant on details from previous books in the series. Only disappointment is the seriousness of subject matter left Angel and Louis so focused on their aims, they had little time for their characteristic banter and bicker and marital moaning . Still gripped me till the end , thanks in no small part to Jeff Harding's powerfully descriptive vocal skills. Well deserved place in my top 20 rereads/ return visits.

The supernatural breaks through
An excellent, well written crime novel. But at this point on the series the supernatural bleeds through so it can't be denied any more. Previously there were hints of ghosts seen from a world beyond the living, but these could have been dismissed as psychological effects of guilt. No more. The Fallen angels live amongst us. Delighting in nightmare horrors. Charlie Parker falls unwillingly into the role of protector. But can one guilt ridden man save humanity from an evil so hideous it was banished from heaven and is beyond God's redemption? Let's hope so.

Best novel in a great series
This is, in my opinion, the best novel of a great series. There is masses of character development for Charlie Parker, interesting background development for Louis; a great plot, fascinating historical background, a very creepy villain, and the narrator captures almost all of the characters excellently (though the Scottish accent was a bit of a stretch).

Dark Labyrinthine Complexities...
If you could sum up The Black Angel in three words, what would they be?
Deep - Shadowy - Compelling
What did you like best about this story?
The slow development of the many layers of plot weaving strands of grief and shadows through the mysteries that surface unexpectedly throughout the reading.
Which character – as performed by Jeff Harding – was your favourite?
All of them ... Jeff Harding is THE master reader. His voice, the intonations and characterisation of both men and women is brilliant. I select books not just for the stories but for the readers. Jeff Harding is always top of the list,
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
After nigh on 17 hours to select even a few highlights would deny merit to the rest of the story. 17 hours is a long time and it is a very long complex story.
