About this listen

England, 1176. King Henry II has imprisoned his rebellious Queen for attempting to overthrow him. But with her conspirators still at large and a failed assassination attempt on his beautiful mistress, Rosamund Clifford, the King must take action to preserve his reign.

Desperate, Henry turns to the only man he trusts: a man whose skills have saved him once before. Sir Benedict Palmer answers the call, mistakenly believing that his family will remain safe while he attends to his King.

As Palmer races to secure the throne for the King, neither man senses the hand of a brilliant schemer, a mystery figure loyal to Henry's traitorous Queen who will stop at nothing to see the King defeated.

The Blood of the Fifth Knight is an intricate medieval murder mystery and a worthy sequel to E. M. Powell's acclaimed historical thriller The Fifth Knight.

Excellent Sequel

Would you listen to The Blood of the Fifth Knight again? Why?

Absolutely. This is Historical Fiction at its best.

What other book might you compare The Blood of the Fifth Knight to, and why?

I don't want to compare it to anything as its a great novel in its own right but if you like Historical adventure/mysteries then you can't go wrong with this.

What does James Langton bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

He attempts to give each character their own voice, though his women's voices are a little high for my liking, hence the four stars and not five.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

I hate books being turned into films. More often than not, it ruins them.

Any additional comments?

This is a great sequel, full of excitement, intrigue and strife as well as twists I never saw coming. Highly sattisfying and impossible to put down.

A thrilling medieval thriller

Even though I’d listen to book 1, it still took a little while to get into the first chapter, but after that I was hooked

I’m a big fan of historical fiction and this one was right up my street, lots of mysterious intrigue and red herrings to keep you guessing.

Clearly there’s lots of artistic license when it comes to the relationships between king Henry and his wives and mistresses, but it all adds to a wonderfully crafted story.

odd intonation in reading

Ok, but somewhat predictable story. found myself thinking - get on with it. The odd inflections of the narrator became irritating
