About this listen

The new ‘Sir Geoffrey Mappestone’ mystery.

When the former crusader knight Geoffrey Mappestone and his friend Roger of Durham try to slip out of England to the Holy Land, a ferocious storm destroys the ship they are on and casts them ashore.

The two knights are unwillingly thrust into the company of other shipwrecked passengers, and while attempting to evade the unwelcome attention of the more dangerous members of the group, they become unwillingly drawn into a plot to overthrow the king and return England to Saxon rule...

Entertaining enough

Liked the details like about medicine/poisons and the nods to historical detail, such as is known, and how the character of Geoffrey has been grown, great portrayal of the English countryside and its dangers to the unwary, Not entirely sure the plot can quite sustain the length of the book, but stick with it as the threads sort of come together at the end.

SO GOOD!

I absolutely love these books!! Convoluted plots so well written, the characters brought to life by the brilliant narrator, the enjoyment of being totally absorbed in the history, the details, the story…..brilliant! Next please!!!

A well narrated farce

I listened to the previous book in this series and it was quite a straightforward medieval murder tale so I expected this one to be much the same. That was wrong.

Three quarters of this story was just farcical, and the actual plot frustratingly made no progress whatsoever. I need say little more than that there was a seemingly serious character with an intelligent chicken as a pet and one who ate only garlic. The slapstick farce was relentless. Were I reading the book I would have given up but I persevered with listening whilst completing other tasks so my time wasn't wasted.

One redeeming feature was the narration which very good.

Slow in parts

An average medieval murder mystery which starts promisingly and ends well but drags badly in between.

intriguing

I enjoyed, although fiction, a lot of historical information is true, the way things are interconnected together. Very fun.

Very Cleverly Written.

Even though the beginning is a little confusing, the story overall is intriguing and wraps itself around a tale that allows the Author, to flex his historical prowess. The humour is spot on, very witty and often laugh out load funny.

Great fun as well as a good story

Written in a similar style to Susanna Gregory, if you enjoy historical mysteries, this has all the facts in there along with a gently numerous style writing that is a pleasure to listen to or read.
