Summary

Set in the same world as The Craftsman, senior policewoman, Florence Lovelady visits the man she put away for murder thirty years earlier. It is the last time she and Larry Glassbrook will meet. He is dying. He wants her to go back to Sabden, in the shadow of Pendle Hill where they met. Four child skeletons have been uncovered near a children's home and Larry, who knows a bit about rotting corpses, isn't buying the official line that these are ancient remains. 'You knew there was something wrong in that town, Florence,' he says. 'More than just me.'

Flossie can't get Larry's words out of her head, especially when she remembers Marigold McGowan, a young mother who disappeared, together with her baby, and were never seen again. Marigold, Florence remembers, had connections to the children's home. Reasoning that Larry may be right, that Sabden could bring her the closure she has looked for all these years, Florence decides to return.

Meanwhile, Larry's eldest daughter, Cassie, is liberated by the news of her father's death. Now, at last, she is free to go back to her home town and win back the love of the man she lost thirty years earlier. It matters not to Cassie that he is married, a father and grandfather. She doesn't care that by going home she might be unearthing secrets that are best left hidden, or that there could be a very good reason why she and this man should not be together. Cassie will stop at nothing to get him back.

A little confusing at first…

Having loved The Craftsman, I was eagerly awaiting the sequel. However immediately I struggled with the timeline and just how this novel wasn’t a rehash of the first. Thankfully as I persevered, the plot and timeline became clear and I could then invest in these fascinating characters once again.
If you’re a fan, it’s worth a read and would be fine as a stand-alone . The narration is top notch, she’s among the best in the business! But be prepared for this one to grow on you, rather than blow you away from the outset.

Utterly Bewitched

Just finished this audio book. Must say, in my opinion, both Craftsmen books are superb. I love all of Sharon Bolton's books and thoroughly recommend them. I also think that Nathalie Buscome narrates well and all characters are recognisable and the accents are believable.
The ending of this book leaves possibilities of the series continuing and I for one hope it does. (can't wait).

Completes The Craftsman

Excellent follow up to a gripping tale of witchcraft and intrigue, over four decades.

Superb narration complements both books.

Loved it!

Another great total package. I really like her way of writing and have enjoyed all her books. Already knowing the characters meant I was hooked from the first word. Performance was great too, really easy to listen to.

Excellent sequel

Excellent sequel. The first book was brilliant and this was just as good, if not better already knowing the characters.

Captivating story and & great narrator

I hope to hear the same narrator in more audio books by Sharon Bolton. This one was gripping and the story does not disappoint, but I also have to commend the narrator’s skills with different accents and varying voices for the characters. It really makes a difference when someone capable reads this kind of story that contains various regional accented people.
