Summary
Who was William Smith? And why was Mavis Jones so horrified to see him? For seven years William had worked as a woodcarver for the local toyshop, ignorant of his true identity. The war had robbed him of his memory, and no one expected him to ever find the answer. So when he took his work to Evesleys Ltd, why was his life instantly in danger? When William makes the frightening discovery that there are people determined not to let his memory return whatever the cost, Miss Silver is called in to investigate. But will she uncover their treachery before Mavis strikes again...?

Very enjoyable
I enjoyed this very much. You really care about the central characters. This novel was published in 1948, and it is lovely to return to the days of good wholesome values and common sense. There is no bad language nor violence, nor obscenity, thank goodness. I deducted one star for two minor issues: (1) an excess of explanation and (2) the mistreatment of prisoners of war in the German POW camp is probably historically inaccurate (compare this with the true stories from Colditz). I liked the narrator, Diana Bishop. Occasionally she puts the intonation in the wrong place, but on the whole she is excellent. She has a lovely voice which is perfect for the period. Sound quality is also excellent. I will definitely listen to other books in this series.

My first Patricia Wentworth
At first I was wary then I found myself enjoying this old fashioned tale,no guns, no swearing just a good tale. Looking forward to my next date with Miss Silver though I wish she would stop coughing!!!!

Perennial Favourite
I first read this book in the late 1960's and have returned to it regularly ever since. This is the first time I have had it read to me and have thoroughly enjoyed it. I am doing some sewing at the moment, and find my knowledge of the book means that if the sound of the machine drowns out the sound of the narrator, like with a well known song, I know exactly where I am when the machine stops and can carry on enjoying the story

A Perfect Patricia Wentworth Audiobookk
This is a perfect starter choice for a very first listen to any of the Patricia Wentworth audiobooks, I thoroughly enjoyed the The Case of William Smith so much that I went straight to Amazon & bought a job lot of 10 1st Edition Wentworth books & bought another lot of of Wentworth Audiobooks to add to my collection.
These are excellent stories if you like the old fashioned crime books like Christie etc. Lots of good storylines & characters with personality without all the vulgar rough blood & gore which can be a little boring after a while. These are an excellent listen ethat I like to do in one go as I rest for a few hours.
The Narrator is perfect for these stories with a good variance of voices for each character, so good I instantly knew who she was supposed to be as I relayed the story like a film in my mind. Very pleased I accidentally came across Patricia Wentworth. It is so nice to have different writers to listen to who can retain the same comfort of listenability as the other crime writer's I like.
