Summary
In a world far from our own, where enemies come in many forms, the ultimate battle for survival continues....
The stakes are higher than ever in The Challenger, the second book in the epic new trilogy from the best-selling author of the Summoner series.
Cade Carter has been chosen.
In a realm of monsters and warriors, Cade is an unwilling contender in a deadly tournament controlled by the brutal alien overlord Abaddon.
Cade may have won the first round, but the fight isn't over yet. For his next battle he must duel a seven-foot-tall, clawed monster - the reigning champion of an alien race.
Losing will lead to earth's destruction.
Desperate for anything that may give him an advantage, Cade sets off on an expedition into the jungle to scavenge weaponry to help him win. But there he is captured by gladiators, and before he knows it he finds himself participating in a deadly new game where the prize is his freedom.
Round two is about to begin....

Incredible read with good narration
I loved this story as it is an amazing fantasy and adventure story with a good plot, the narration was very good, with just the right amount of change for each character.

Could not put it down
Where the first book in this trilogy had as its main focus survival, this instalment centred around the character development and training of our hero’s’. I certainly do have a soft spot for military academies and fighting schools in my fantasy fiction and this one definitely scratched that itch. The author added enough detail in the story to make me even more immersed and invested in the protagonist's fate. The romance, however, felt a little bit awkward and I’m not sure if it’s because I was given the impression that the author was told that there has to be some sort of romance and they just added it as an extra. It didn’t seem to have much of a significance in the plot, at least for now. Looking forward to reading the third book in the trilogy, the ending left me wanting more.
If you were a fan of the summoner series, I think you would enjoy this immensely. Taran Matharu certainly knows how to keep you on the edge of your seat with his brutal action scenes, and fast paced plot. The narration was excellent as always, I am a little bit curious about the American accents of the characters, but that aside I was fully invested and hooked bye Raj Ghatak's storytelling choices.
