A well told storie laced with historical facts. Very well read and enchanting from the get go.

thoroughly enchanting

This was a very well researched book bringing back to life King Harold, and the times he lived in. He was portrayed as an upstanding honest man who, as with another king later his successor sought to eradicate from history. Like with King Richard it would be really good to find his remains and honour them as they should be. The story clothes all the characters and makes them real, the narrator subtly indicates the different women, loved the melding of the pagan with the new romanised procedures. What could have been a very distressing ending was dealt with in a sympathetic manner portraying Duke William with just the right amount of contempt. An informative enjoyable story and performance .

I love this story, from the sparks rising from the introduction's bonfire to the author's notes at the end. The narrator reads it well, managing to differentiate between the two lead female voices very well.
The friendship between the two women linked to Harold Godwinson, whilst not historically sound, is beautifully captured in letters between them. Even though we all know the ending, the author makes it a thrilling, heart rending ride. I've read the book a few times, even so I was praying for the shield wall to hold during the last battle. I always wonder what if it had held, what if the outcome had been different. I'm so emotionally invested in this story and the people in it that I'm having difficulty moving on to books 2 and 3 in the trilogy. It's like I don't want to let Edith and Svanna go.... Highly recommended

The author reads this historical romance very engagingly. I love the authentic historical bent, though the end battle is sad, disturbing and inevitable. I was also glad of the historical notes to explain what was likely to have happened next for the protagonists.

As an ardent fan of Elizabeth Chadwick, I was pleasantly surprised by Joanna Courtney. The story was well paced and fed my imagination and love of history.
The author had researched her book well and had me 'googleing' all sorts to find out more.
The characters were well written and believable and I look forward to listening to more if her work
I will certainly be adding Ms Courtney to my favourite author list.

Loved it! Having almost lost faith in finding a good historical read, following previous great reads from other authors. This is it. Gripped from the beginning to the end, and also enjoyed the final historical notes. Ready to read the next book to follow. Very pleasant narration, very relaxing and absorbing. Thank you both.

I really enjoyed this book so would recommend to anyone interested in this period of history. The narrator Clare Corbett was superb.

Beautifully narrated

This may have been the first book in a good series but sadly, for me, this was ruined by an absolutely awful narration by Clare Corbett. So bad was it that I had to abandon the book by Chapter 16. It was ok to start with, then I noticed audible intakes of breath which made the young Edith's voice sound girly and a little breathless. Which was obviously fine while Edith was young. However this got worse and worse and became almost incessant. I began to anticipate the breaths.

Sadly the accents were also poor particularly that of Edith's Welsh husband who sounded like a pantomime dame. Unfortunately, this made the mental image of the sex scenes between the two laughable. I'm glad I got out before investing any more of my time but I do hate to abandon a good story!
