About this listen

Landing a minor part in the Empire Theatre Eastbourne’s Christmas production of Cinderella, Charles Paris soon discovers that his main role is to gently introduce the show’s baffled American star, Kenny Polizzi, to the bizarre customs of English pantomime.

During their sessions in the local pub, Charles finds himself increasingly caught up in Polizzi’s tangled affairs. But Charles is about to be far more involved than he might wish when he stumbles across a body beneath Eastbourne Pier. As the world’s press descends, the pantomime rehearsals slip into chaos. It’s up to Charles to put his renowned sleuthing skills to the test to find out who really killed his fellow cast member - and why.

Really enjoyed the theatrical setting and story line. Unfortunately the narrators sniff was off putting.

Enjoyable read.

Another witty and wonderful Charles Paris mystery read by its author. Thoroughly, addictable, I have already listened to this many times--the sign of a successful novel. This one, is about a big American TV star, who comes to Blighty to get away from a number of things. There are wonderful and original characters, which you would expect from Simon Brett, and suspects, motive and trouble for our hero and every where. Brett's witt and observations are the jam in the sponge.

Very much recommended.

I enjoyed the reading and found the story interesting. The characters are well rounded and believable as is the setting.

A funny piece with plenty of twists

The usual gentle whodunnit starring the unlikely hero (mostly intoxicated) - an easy listen well-read by the author.

Cozy

A much more interesting case for Charles Paris than the previous book. This is read brilliantly by the author.

Much better than three previous CP outing

Great theatrical tale

This book droned on with the history about pantomime and the story never got underway, the narrator didn't help either. I gave up on it. Don't bother with it.

Rubbish

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A complete rewrite and a comprehensible reader.

What will your next listen be?

hopefully better than this one.

What didn’t you like about Simon Brett’s performance?

Croaky, hesitant, stammering, erratic, breathless, inaudible, the worst reader I've ever listened to. Surprised it was published at all. Have heard him on the radio and he sounded loud and clear. He sounded as though he had had a stroke in this audiobook.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

None whatsoever, story line almost non existent, lead character boring, tedious characters, fell asleep after one chapter each time I tried to listen to it, finished it (with relief) after several goes and run backs and fast forwarding to the last chapter but it wasn't worth the trouble as the final answer was a let down. In fact I can't remember now who done it (and not that bothered).

Any additional comments?

I have to say here I am a massive fan of Simon Brett. I have lots of recordings of the radio plays with Bill Nighy, which I have listened to over and over. I have read lots of the Charles Paris books and Fetherings and Mrs Pargeter. There was no story to this book at all, just historical detail and inside information about pantomimes in general, almost a course in them, almost as though the story was strapped on as an afterthought. Surprised and disappointed with Simon Brett, a first.

Very disappointing
