Summary
An Amazon Charts bestseller.
To a cunning serial killer, she was the one that got away. Until now...
FBI Special Agent Nina Guerrera escaped a serial killer’s trap at sixteen. Years later, when she’s jumped in a Virginia park, a video of the attack goes viral. Legions of new fans are not the only ones impressed with her fighting skills. The man who abducted her 11 years ago is watching. Determined to reclaim his lost prize, he commits a grisly murder designed to pull her into the investigation...but his games are just beginning. And he’s using the internet to invite the public to play along.
His coded riddles may have made him a depraved social media superstar - an enigmatic cyber-ghost dubbed “the Cipher” - but to Nina he’s a monster who preys on the vulnerable. Partnered with the FBI’s preeminent mind hunter, Dr. Jeffrey Wade, who is haunted by his own past, Nina tracks the predator across the country. Clue by clue, victim by victim, Nina races to stop a deadly killer while the world watches.
Critic reviews
“The survivor of a vicious crime confronts her fears in a hunt for a serial killer…forensic analysis, violent action, and a tough heroine who stands up to the last man on earth she wants to see again.” --Kirkus Reviews
“[In] this riveting series launch from Maldonado…the frequent plot twists will keep readers guessing to the end, and Maldonado draws on her 22 years in law enforcement to add realism. Determined to overcome her painful past, the admirable Nina has enough depth to sustain a long-running series.” --Publishers Weekly
“A heart-pounding novel from page one, The Cipher checks all the boxes for a top-notch thriller: sharp plotting, big stakes, and characters - good and bad and everywhere in between - that are so richly drawn you’ll swear you’ve met them. I read this in one sitting and I guarantee you will too. Oh, another promise: You’ll absolutely love the Warrior Girl!” --Jeffery Deaver, New York Times bestselling author

A powerful telling.
Wow, what an opening. Agent Garera is a tough, dynamic, formidable individual. You will be taken along with her and her team as they face a fearsome unsub.
I am looking forward to reading/listening to more of her challenges and hope to see positive things in her life.
The narration was excellent, not an automated voice, (at least I don't think it was).
If this type of genre is your thing you won't be disappointed with this. Enjoy.

A very good 1st book.
This a great 1at novel and introduction of a new series, one which I will happily follow. The characters are very well developed although sometimes clichéd, but there is a definite scope for growth in further book's. Nina is a well thought out lead and the building of the team dynamic is good. Overall I would recommend this to anyone looking for a new writer to try.

Predictable
Very little in this to grab my attention I’m afraid. Quite violent and rather formulaic.

His character
A little more romance would lend itself to the character I think. Brings the fact that two people spending time together would bring something to the table.

Criminal Minds in book form
Although the beginning of the book is promising, as you go further in the story it feels like reading an episode of Criminal Minds. It helps you pass the time but there is nothing memorable. Conversation is flat, characters are without much depth and overall stereotypes. I can imagine this is just the first one of a loooong series..

A fab listen
I found this great book by accident while looking for a different thriller also called the Cipher. I’m glad I decided to listen to it and not return it. I wasn’t too sure when I heard the main character was in the FBI but I shouldn’t have worried.
This has a solid story line backed up with a strong female lead. I felt myself drawn in to what she was going through and found myself routing for her at ever corner. The support character were well written avoiding any FBI cliches.
I would recommend this book as I am looking forward to the next Nina Guerrera book and will look for more works by Isabella Maldonado
