Saint Augustine
About this listen
The City of God is one of the most important works of Christian history and philosophy ever written. The writings of St. Augustine are as intriguing to the casual reader as it is to Christian researchers. St. Augustine's work provides insight into Western thought and the development of Western civilizations. The City of God provides the reader with an artful contrast between earthy cities and those in heaven as a representation of the eternal struggle between good and evil. The City of God was originally penned in the early 5th century as a response to the prevalent belief that Christianity was to blame for the fall of Rome. St. Augustine is known as one of the most influential Fathers of the Catholic Church. Born November 13, 354, Augustine would eventually be recognized as a Saint by the Catholic Church, the Eastern Christian Church, and the Anglican Communion.

Great book, terrible narration
Unfortunately the narrator sounds like he is reading a telephone directory. Sadly I think I’m going to have to buy the book and read it!

Limited reading of a truly great work
Saint Augustine is a doctor of the church, and one of the greatest Christian minds ever to walk the Earth. His work is peerless as theology and incredibly interesting as history.
Yet I must in all honesty say that it is difficult as an audiobook to follow, because at times the narrator seems not to be following the arguments himself. I find myself having to replay sections to try to extract the argument despite the narration. The narrator needed to speak as Augustine, a difficult task, and he was not successful. I stress that the task of narrating such a work is a very difficult one, but unfortunately as a keen listener to this great work I found the narration was found wanting at times

Interesting book
I am a big fun of St Augustine. This book is not an easy listening. The performance does not help. It is pretty monotonous and I get as the reader did not really understand the text, or at least he did not make it his. In another st Augustine’s audio book, Confessions, I could hear St Augustine himself.
