About this listen

1960s Brighton, England... With five comedians in the frame, murder has never been such fun… pity the corpse didn’t see the joke.

The dead body of a theatrical agent.

A missing book worth a fortune.

Five comedians in the frame for murder.

There’s trouble for crime reporter Colin Crampton when theatrical agent Daniel Bernstein turns up murdered. Colin discovers that any of five comedians competing for the chance to appear on a top TV show could be behind the killing.

As Colin and his feisty girlfriend Shirley Goldsmith investigate, they encounter a cast of colourful characters–identical twin gangsters, an Irishman who lives underground, and a failed magician’s assistant. And it’s not long before their own lives are in peril as they battle to crack a code that could lead to a fortune.

“Humour, clever plotting, a warm sense of nostalgia and–above all–an abundance of charm.”–Fully Booked

"A quality offering from a talented writer who has honed his craft."–Booklover Book Reviews

Fun Murder Mystery

A fun murder mystery with interesting characters, excellent plot and a narrator for the audio book that brings it all to life.

This is the first "Crampton of the Chronicle" book I've read\listened to but it most definitely won't be the last - I'm off to find books 1 & 2

Crampton On The Case Again

When Brighton theatrical agent Danny Bernstein is murdered, the Chronicle’s critic Sidney Pinker is arrested as chief suspect. Knowing that Sidney’s aggressive tendencies stop at a sharp tongue and handbags at dawn, fellow reporter Colin Crampton has other ideas and sets out to clear his colleague’s name, all without the support of his editor.

Bernstein was agent to the recently deceased Brighton based top comedian Max Miller, the cheeky chappie who teased audiences with saucy jokes from his famous “Blue Book”. Colin suspects the murder centres around the quest to possess the priceless joke book bequest to Bernstein. Unfortunately, this produces a long list of suspects from failed comedians to local and international gangsters.

Can Colin and his streetwise girlfriend unravel the mystery as they trawl the showbiz underworld, encountering the eccentrics and the unpleasant characters it attracts?

Peter Bartram’s likeable hero Colin Crampton and his supporting cast are brought to life by Matt Jamie, a talented multi-voiced actor/narrator. If you have read any of these 1960’s based Crampton novels, I would highly recommend you try at least one audiobook version. It will certainly increase your enjoyment of this fast paced series.
