About this listen
An epic tale of evil and rescue, betrayal and love, and a terrorist threat unlike anything the human race has ever known.
Ted Dekker’s best-selling and most beloved series - together in one volume.
It's the story of a man named Thomas Hunter, an unlikely hero who finds himself pulled between two worlds. In our reality, he works in a coffee house. In the other, he becomes a battle-scarred general leading a band of followers known as the Circle. Every time he falls asleep in one reality, he wakes in the other. The fate of both worlds now rests on his ability to shift realities through his dreams - and somehow, find a way to change history.
Four novels. Two worlds. One story.
Praise for the Circle series:
“Put simply: it’s a brilliant, dangerous idea. And we need more dangerous ideas.... Dekker’s trilogy is a mythical epic, with a vast, predetermined plot and a scope of staggering proportions.... Black is one of those books that will make you thankful that you know how to read. If you love a good story, and don’t mind suspending a little healthy disbelief, Black will keep you utterly enthralled from beginning to...well, cliffhanger. Red can’t get here fast enough.” (FuseMagazine.net)
“As a producer of movies filled with incredible worlds and heroic characters, I have high standards for the fiction I read. Ted Dekker’s novels deliver big with mind-blowing, plot-twisting page-turners. Fair warning - this trilogy will draw you in at a breakneck pace and never let up. Cancel all plans before you start because you won’t be able to stop once you enter Black.” (Ralph Winter, producer - X-Men, X2: X-Men United, Planet of the Apes, executive producer - StarTrek V: Final Frontier)
“Black has to be the read of the year! A powerful, thought-provoking, edge-of-your-seat thriller of epic proportions that offers great depth and insight into the forces around us.” (Joe Goodman, film producer, Namesake Entertainment)

1. The prequel book [titled Green] can ruin the main three books as it contains a few summaries within the story. It came out 5 years later.
2. There is random music at the end / beginning of some of the chapters. It was recorded at a higher level than the narrator and as a result it break the immersion of the book and it often is loud and garish on the ear.
On with the Good.
This was a gripping set of books written extremely well. Very strong characters and great involving story. Not all the twists were predictable and although many things in the story break immersion due to just being illogical, as they are explained in the story they make complete sense within the narrative and as a result are great story drivers.
I will be buying more of this author as it was so good.
Great gripping story shame about the sound effects

The Book:
The idea for this story and Biblical allergories are absolutely fantastic, however at times more care with the language could have made this a really good book. The language from today's world very often gets used in the "other/forest" world and I think if the author had kept them separate linguistically it would have been great. One example I can think of this is in White something is described as a "raging Pitbull" but we haven't even heard of dogs existing in this other world.
I found the battle scenes a bit hard to go through, kind of slog? But overall kept going for the overarching story. I really like little bits of scripture that are peppered in here and there.
Overall, it's a series I'd recommend but I'll add the caveat about the idea vs execution.
Narration & Audio:
The narrator who does Green, Red and Black is good - suitable character voices and good intonation and speed.
The music transitions really missed the mark for me, I prefer a story read with no sound effects or music. It distracts me and take me out of the story.
I really struggled with the narration of White. Putting the speed up to 1.25 made it more tolerable but the narrator (sorry if you are reading this btw) has a weird intonation going up at the end of every single word. I also really disliked the voices for the characters.
Great idea, average execution
