About this listen

Audie Award, Solo Narration - Male, 2009

Dashing young Edmond Dantès has everything: a fine reputation, an appointment as captain of a ship, and the heart of a beautiful woman. But his perfect life is shattered when three jealous friends conspire to destroy him. Falsely accused of a political crime, Dantès is locked away for life in the infamous Chateau d'If prison. But it is there that Dantès learns of a vast hidden treasure. After 14 years of hopeless imprisonment, Dantès makes his daring escape and follows his secret map to untold fortune. Disguised now as the mysterious and powerful Count of Monte Cristo, Dantès seeks out his enemies - and nothing will stand in the way of his just revenge.

Filled with thrilling episodes of betrayal, romance, and revenge, The Count of Monte Cristo is one of the greatest adventure stories ever written.

It was brilliant, enough said. Can't believe it was written so long ago. Unabridged version says so much more.

Its probably the best audiobook that I have ever listened to. Superb narration of a riveting story beautifully crafted.

sensational

The story of a long and unbelievably detailed revenge is amazingly well written. The setups for things to happen 20 chapters later are very subtle but also easy to recall.

The performance so so clear you can comfortably listen at a very fast speed.

A true epic

This tale has been chopped about over the years until the true essence of a wonderful writer has all but been lost! Here, though is the complete story. Anyone who wishes to know just how to write should study this!
John Lee is one of the most talented narrators I have ever listened to. As I have said before, with other stories, his characterisation is perfect!!

A MUST LISTEN!

Not the sort of book I would normally listen to, but I enjoyed it so much (all 52 hours) that when I reached the end, I went straight back to the start and listened to it again. Something I have never done before. It was even better the second time. The story is so clever with every chapter being of significance to the plot. I will certainly listen to more by Alexandre Dumas.

The narrator, John Lee, is brilliant. His speech is clear and easy on the ear and his French pronunciation added so much to the enjoyment of this epic book.

Unexpectedly one of my best audible books

Flawless and well crafted epic worthy of any list of top five classic fiction novels of all time ( so far). Don't neglect to read (listen to) this thinking you know the oh so familiar story as you've seen the film. The film adaptation is but a pale shadow of the riches found within the book. It's exquisitely written and beautifully narrated. It gripped me for the full 47 hours and I'm saddened it's ended. One of a handful of books I wish I could experience again for the first time....

Timeless Classic beautifully narrated.

I have been totally enthralled by this version of the classic Count of Monte Christo, it is truly spellbinding and the descriptions are so evocative that you would think you were there, I find myself making excuses to listen to more and more.

A really outstanding listen.

Outstanding Monte Christo

Great book

One of my favourite books of all time. While on the long side, the twists and turns are worth the wait. Some bits haven't stood the test of time, hence not giving 5 stars. The reader is good, but makes some characters sound a bit too silly from time to time. Highly recommend taking the time to listen this book, you won't regret it!

A masterpiece

I absolutely loved this book. This is my first time reading it, and the brilliant narration truly brings the story to life. However, to help speed what is a mammoth undertaking, I started switching between the print version and the audio. Differences in translation aside, which did not at all dampen my enjoyment, I soon became aware that this is far from unabridged! There are entire sections of pages which are simply not here, one of which being one of the most moving in the whole book in my opinion. I almost want to go back and start over in case I missed more in the sections in which I was listening to the audio.

If nothing else though, this sentiment should convince you of the ridiculous quality of this story. As others have said, yes, it is of course dated in parts, but also surprisingly modern in others, and irresistibly engaging and surprising throughout!

Brilliant, but NOT unabridged!!!
