I know absolutely nothing about this era in our history, but this was a great way to start learning!
The Crabchurch Conspiracy is a very detailed & interesting tale of conspiracy, back-stabbing and all round skull-duggery!
The narration by Jon C Dixon was flawless, his rich, clear tone, aided by the music and sound effects, made this a very pleasant listen.

This book was researched and written with great love and care and the audio version has been given the same consideration. Regarding the content: history-wise I cannot attempt to top the glowing praise given by Professor Hutton. In respect of the audio - the story has been bought to life by John C Dixon's narration and also the sound effects and music which add to, rather than detract from, this perfectly crafted account of the events.

This English civil war was one of the most pivotal and now largely forgotten about turning points in our history, this excellently researched and written book gives life to a small but very important part of that war.

From feeling the high spirits of victory to the pain of the losses, this book gives it all. One could almost feel the chill wind blowing in off of Weymouth harbour.

The wonderful narration and lovely music just further allow the reader to immerse themselves into the content. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book and will again and again.

A huge well done to the author and all involved in the production of this audiobook. This would, in my humble opinion, make for a fantastic Tv series or movie.

After loosing myself in the atmosphere of this enthralling tale of the struggle that happened at a town on my doorstep, I have to say that it was written in an engaging way and perfectly narrated. Nice touches with the music and sound effects which help to keep you immersed in the book. An excellent example of how to tell a true historical story well.

Works exceedingly well. I am a great admirer of Mark Vine's 'Crabchurch Conspiracy'. Sure will be remembered for many years as a classic study of the attempted Royalist seizure of Parliamentarian held Weymouth in 1645, hatched in Portland. The book is thorough, and compelling, particularly in trying to remind the people of Dorset how the Civil War impacted on their history. Also examines the interesting possibility that if Crabchurch had succeeded and the Royalists had got their desired Channel port, the whole outcome of the Civil War, perhaps of British History itself, may have been different.
The book is read well by Jon Dixon, and has extracts from the 'Crabchurch Conspiracy' CD by local Folk Rock band The Dolmen. Though I thought that I was quite familiar with the original text, gained a lot more from hearing it on audio. Added another dimension to the tale of 'Crabchurch' . And finally, one is reminded however ghastly war is, there is courage and honour amongst all the horror. Certainly a listening experience which leaves a lasting impression.

This is an excellent account of one of Britain's hidden history gems. As a teacher this is great way to engage students on a audio level. I especially loved the sound effects that accompanies the narrator, giving atmosphere and enjoyable transitions.

The author is a Dorset man and has researched this story for many years.
Mark Vine lives in Weymouth and has walked the streets and areas that this story takes place in.
Jon C Dixon is the best man for the narration of this story as he himself lives in Weymouth and is passionate about history.
The narration is first class and is very easy on the ear.
The music and sound effects do not detract from the narrative, but rather add to it

Having so enjoyed the original paperback I was very much looking forward to the audible version. I naively expected to be doing housework while listening, that did not happen. I was far to bewitched, drawn into the time and place of an important historical event, captivated by the tales of the characters who each played a part. Such a meticulously researched tale, expressed in such an atmospheric way, provoking many an emotional response. I believe this account holds far reaching appeal, beyond the obvious fascination such a chronicle holds for local people and those with an interest in history. I agree with others, this would make a wonderful television series.

Well this was a new and unique experience for me. I’m a great lover of Audible books but I haven’t lived an experience like this before.
How the author Mark Vine can have such immense historical information and make it feel like a personal experience is beyond me.
I was instantly captivated by the atmospheric tones of the narrator
Jon C.Dixon. I went into a life previously unknown to me, surrounded by music and sounds creating my own visual pictures. I was there, feeling the emotions, seeing and smelling what was happening around me.
I completely recommend this too anyone brave enough to be there.
