Summary
Julian was in love with Alexandra, Alexandra was in love with Julian. She had no doubts about that, and being engaged to Julian was delightful. Yet, somehow, as a husband, she felt he might prove less perfect - until she had taught him the little lesson he needed. Julian learnt it in Scotland, Yorkshire, Devon, London. His mystified family looked on.
When Julian Hurst went into partnership in an art business instead of in the family firm of solicitors, his family was surprised that he made such a success of it.
They would have been still more surprised if they had known what his business trip to Yorkshire to view some Clauval paintings was to lead to.
His engagement to the delightful but mysterious Alexandra Bell, and her subsequent disappearance which led him such a dance through Scotland, Yorkshire, Devon, and London, provoked behavior which seemed odd, to say the least of it.

Terrible narrator
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The Cuckoo in Spring is one of Cadell's more confused 'love stories'. It is full of her trademark eccentric characters. The hero is a young man who is spoiled and confused at having to work to win his girl. Intentionally, she is rather vague and undefined. Too many of the characters are unloved and unlovely for me to love this Cadell, and the heroine's evasive actions were less explicable than they often are. Nevertheless, I enjoyed reading the book, so when I was doing some handwork at home that made reading impossible, I bought this audio version to have some light listening while I stiched. Whoa, the audio version is pretty awful.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Cuckoo in Spring?
The part where he first arrives at the Yorkshire house to catalogue the paintings and meets Alexandra. She steels the sheets off his bed and the coal for his fire. I did like them first falling in love.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator sounded very mannered as she tried to express a wealthy family going about its business. This book is already a bit stiff with Cadell's entitled middle class family, but I was perservering until she read the part of Nanny. Dick van Dyke was nothing on her absolutely terrible accent. Cadell even gave the narrator an out by describing Nanny's accent as combining two accents, but Klett's version (it sounded like her idea of a Yorkshire voice) was absolutely hideous and made it almost impossible to continue listening. I had been so impressed with Sun in the Morning, the other Audible Cadell I had listened to, that this was a real disappointment. I am sorry that I paid for this.

I can feel Elizabeth Cadell turning in her grave, just read the book.

Please listen to the extract and remember that this is as good as it gets, and in many places the voice is MUCH worse. I would really recommend you read the book and skip the audio version.
