Summary

Early in the morning on August 27, 1996, 20-year-old Scott Dominguez showed up for an ordinary day at the fertilizing plant where he worked. By 11:00 am, he was clinging to life, unconscious and suffocating from toxic exposure to cyanide in a tank that was supposed to contain only mud and water.

EPA Special Agent Joseph Hilldorfer was tasked with finding out what really happened on that horrific day in Soda Springs, Idaho, but the answers would not be easily uncovered. For more than four years, Hilldorfer, his partner Bob Wojnicz, and a force of top-ranking US attorneys struggled to expose the disturbing truths behind the tragedy, but would their efforts be enough to put the man responsible, Allan Elias, behind bars?

Critic reviews

"[An] electrically charged narrative...Top-notch nonfiction legal thriller, reminding readers of the baseline: 'This all comes down to one thing. It's all about money.'" ( Kirkus)

Gripping and moving

An extremely moving story of the fight against injustice.
When I downloaded I had made an assumption it was a work of fiction but realised extremely quickly once starting the book that it was a non-fiction.
Not entirely sure it’s what I wanted to listen to, I was hooked within the first couple of chapters.
The main characters are brought to life so brilliantly, the story compelling so early on, I couldn’t stop listening.

Highly recommend this listen.

Excellent

I only listened to this because I love the author, I was looking for something new, this came up on the Plus Catalogue. I decided to try it as I had nothing to lose. Initially I thought it wasn’t for me and I’d find something else - but I was drawn in very quickly. The entire thing is absolutely fascinating. Being from the UK, I’m pretty clueless about the US legal system so I can only assume it’s accurate. The explanations we’re through but explained complex details in a way that made sense. I was completely enthralled and I’m a little gutted I got to the end!

Top drawer

It’s amazing.
This is worth a read but I suggest listening lol.
I had to go over many parts more than once as the information I was processing was tough.

Help

Scary because white collar crime is seen as not that serious and is often under punished.

Excellent research and narration.

Not my usual read but Robert Dugoni’s involvement drew me too it. Pleased to learn justice was ultimately served in the end.
