Summary
Anthony Peake is engaged in one of the most important strands of ontological inquiry of modern times, nothing less than unravelling the Gordian knot that is the mystery of our existence." (Bob Rickard, founder editor of Fortean Times)
Appearing in Greek mythology and popularized by Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, the Daemon is broadly understood as a guiding spirit which exists as one half of your split self.
In The Daemon: A Guide to Your Extraordinary Secret Self, Anthony Peake proposes that people consist of not one but two separate consciousnesses - everyday consciousness and that of The Daemon, a higher being that seems to possess knowledge of future events. Drawing upon phenomena such as déjà vu and near-death experiences, he explores the ways that our Daemon breaks through into our consciousness and can subconsciously impact upon our decisions.
From the author of Is There Life After Death?, this endlessly fascinating book draws upon the neurology, metaphysics and theology. It also follows the stories of famous figures, including Byron, Geothe, Jean Cocteau, and many others who have "felt a force outside themselves". This radical book will change the way you perceive reality, time, and ultimately yourself.

In-depth Exploration into Consciousness
The term Daemon has been ‘randomly’ popping up in my life lately so thought it worth an exploration. . .
I like that Peake isn’t simply a ‘yes’ man agreeing to all the theories, but is confident to question, challenge and build upon those he has presented.
I enjoy a deep dive into the scientific evidence that support these theories, however in this book I sometimes lost track of all the names, different terms coined by those names and the threads that tied them together. I think this is probably more due to my personal RAM not being up to scratch than the author’s inability to write coherently! I shall re-listen with a notepad at some point in order to follow up on additional research.
I like it when audiobooks are read by their authors, I find you get a more authentic telling hearing it in the tone it was written. This one is no exception. Good to hear a fellow Brit, clear and understandable performance by Peake. (I listen on x1.10 speed)
Upon finishing the book I have surmised it may well be my ‘Daemon’ itself guiding me along this path of information and education, as I have in recent years become an avid absorber of podcasts and audiobooks. I always listening with my right ear - I have recently learned this is associated with the left brain speech and language part of hearing - and as I am a lefty this is also my ‘non-dominant’ (Daemon dwelling) side. Over the last few years my Daemon-Eidolon Dyad has moved from ‘self-help’ resilience boosting, neuroscience-based psychology books, and discovered a world of collective consciousness, energy, magic, occult, life after death, neurodiversity and enlightenment.
I have experienced many occurrences of déjà vu over the years, as well as weird serendipitous/synchronistic experiences, clairaudience, and ‘seeing’ things in my mind’s eye that has later happened. I am also a migraine sufferer (not so common these days) and my late uncle died many years before I was born, from epilepsy.
I often use the terms ‘one Me’ and ‘the other Me’ in reference to my dual thought processes and found Peake’s exploration into the neuroscience and subjective experiences of people like me enthralling.
