About this listen

"You must allow me to tell you..."

For over 200 years, Jane Austen's Mr. Darcy has captivated readers' imaginations as the ultimate catch. Rich. Powerful. Noble. Handsome. And yet, as Miss Austen's Pride and Prejudice is established through Elizabeth Bennet's fine eyes, how are we to know his mind? How does Darcy progress from "she is tolerable: but not handsome enough to tempt me" to "I thought only of you"?

In this romance anthology, 15 Austenesque authors assemble to sketch Darcy's character through a series of reimaginings, set in the Regency through contemporary times - from faithful narratives to the fanciful. In The Darcy Monologues, the man himself reveals his intimate thoughts, his passionate dreams, and his journey to love - all told with a previously concealed wit and enduring charm.

Stories by Susan Adriani, Sara Angelini, J. Marie Croft, Karen M. Cox, Jan Hahn, Jenetta James, Lory Lilian, KaraLynne Mackrory, Beau North, Ruth Phillips Oakland, Natalie Richards, Sophia Rose, Joana Starnes, Melanie Stanford, Caitlin Williams

Critic reviews

"Since he's fictional, this is the closest I can get to have him whispering in my ear sweet nothings and thoughts I imagined Mr. Darcy would say." —Of Pens and Pages

"Think of The Darcy Monologues as your JAFF gateway drug. Don't worry, experts agree; it lowers anxiety, increases imagination, and is very good for health." —Period Drama Madness

"...there really is something here to suit all tastes, and to delight any diehard Darcy fan." —Joceline Bury, Jane Austen Regency World Magazine

"Frost captures Darcy's tone perfectly, bringing a heart and soul to the character that readers get only a glimpse of in the original novel. The remaining half of the audiobook contains stories from other eras, reimagining Darcy as a baseball player, a school principal, and an Old West traveler, to name but a few. Frost portrays everything from New York sophisticate to grizzled cowboy, never falling into caricature. A delightful listening experience." —AudioFile Magazine

Snapshots that will tingle your senses!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes! It's fun! It's a lovely angle into each and every scene of Pride and Prejudice that left you hankering for more.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Mr. Darcy!
Because P&P is amazing, I was already a fan, but this gives you the opportunity to see a lot of stories from his side, which Austen did not include.

What about Harry Frost’s performance did you like?

His voice is just yum. Deep and gravelly and still room for emotion and intonation without feeling like acting.

Fabulous narration of some entertaining stories

REALLY enjoyed these stories and personally preferred the original era ones more than the modern ones towards the end, but that's a personal preference.
Harry Frost's narration was brilliant. I've heard him do "Mr Darcy" stories before and he's probably my favourite voice of all the well loved characters. His American accent was believable too. Really handy shorter length stories to enjoy when having a tea break. I'd highly recommend.

Fantastic!

Harry Frost's narration is absolutely perfect for Darcy and this compilation has something for everyone. I usually only like variations that are set in the original time period (and more than half the stories in this collection are) but I thoroughly enjoyed the whole collection. Darcy's voice remains true regardless of the circumstances. While there are stories I liked better than others, there aren't any that I didn't like, which is almost unheard of in such a large collection!

A collection of Darcy stories

This is an amazing collection of stories from Darcys point of view written by some of the best known authors of the genre and others who were not as familiar to me. There are a variety of stories in here - some traditional, some modern, some in between and some are set in America... they all capture Darcy really well as someone really.ly capable and confident but hopeless at understanding women! If yiu asked me, I'd say I'm not a fan of modern retellings but I loved every single one of the modern tales as much as those in a more traditional style.

I listened to this on audible and the narration is brilliant... Lady Catherine shouting 'Nephew!' Was just amazing... I laughed out loud... whenever I read that in a book from now on, it will be Harry Frist's voice I hear! Some male narrators can struggle with female voices... not here though. Harry Frost does an excellent job.

The highlights for me were as follows... J. Marie Croft takes us through the process of Darcy constructing his letter to Elizabeth... its vicious! Joan's Staines treats us to a very intimate conversation between Darcy and Elizabeth in which he opens up because he's drunk and thinks he's dreaming! KaraLynne Mackrory treats us to a surprise at the Netherfield ball involving secret passages and Melanie Stanford gives us a Beauty and the Beast style story. All the stories were brilliant. I'd recommend this book and the audio version is great too!

Great anthology. Worth a repeat listen or three.

The Darcy Monologues is a wonderful anthology and Harry Frost does a wonderful job of bringing all these Darcys to life. Whether set in Jane Austen’s time, the current time or any time in between we find a new and interesting iteration of Mr Darcy. At times he’s the strong stoic man we first meet in Pride and Prejudice. At other times he’s smitten and unsure how to act. Every time Harry gets it right with his tone, pace and emotion.

Where to start? Well, none of the authors in this anthology are familiar to me so I had no idea what to expect.

I enjoyed each story and was keenly listening to words and situations from the book. All the authors have done an excellent job with their take on the inner thoughts of Mr Darcy.

The highlights for me were Death of a Bachelor by Caitlin Williams. The crisp, tight prose was a delight to listen to. Being inside Darcy’s mind was a novel experience and I really enjoyed listening to his thoughts and feelings.

For its humour and biting sarcasm, From the Ashes by J. Marie Croft deserves a mention. Darcy’s thoughts as he labours over his letter to Elizabeth is very clever.

And lastly, The Ride Home by Ruth Phillips Oakland has some laugh out loud moments as Darcy contends with a drunk Elizabeth.

None of the stories are long, so it’s the perfect anthology when you want to dip into Mr. Darcy’s world for a short time.

Highly recommended.

Very nice

I thoroughly enjoyed the Regency time stories. Really entertaining. Mr. Frost's narration is absolutely fabulous. I have listened to it so many times just to listen to him.

Heavenly

I absolutely loved listening to all those stories. I found it fascinating in how many different ways the Darcy & Elizabeth story can be told. I loved them all. No matter in which period. Found myself laughing out loud while driving and listening. The fact that no matter which period is chosen for the story, is evidence of how relatable Darcy & Elizabeth are.

I loved the narrator's Mr Darcy voice. Deep, so masculine and very sexy.

I will definitely revisit the Darcy Monologues.

A diverse and delightful collection

I thoroughly enjoyed this collection of stories, some of which re-imagined the Darcy we know, and others that reinvented him completely. It is impossible to review such a varied collection of tales as a whole, for they each have their own merits, but I especially enjoyed Death of a Bachelor by Caitlin Williams, If Only A Dream Pt1 & Pt 2 by Joana Starnes, Clandestiny by KaraLynne Mackrory, Reason to Hope by Jenetta James, and Pemberley by Stage by Natalie Richards.

The majority of the stories - like the original - are sweet/clean, with a few containing a little mild heat.

The narrator, Harry Frost, was new to me but was a delightful discovery! He was wonderful, and the perfect choice to bring us so many interpretations of Darcy. He had a rich, rounded voice, with a natural-sounding nobility and authority that instantly transported the listener back in time or across the Atlantic.

I'd recommend this collection to Janeites everywhere, but also to anyone who enjoyed the Quill Ink's previous anthology, Rational Creatures, as much as I did.

A brilliant anthology with an amazing narrator.

Where do I begin?

Well firstly, Christina Boyd did a magnificent job in getting together such a wonderful band of writers. All have produced top quality works in this genre in the past. Not all have written full length novels but the shorter works they've produced haven't lost anything for all that.

Secondly, who wouldn't want to read or listen to a collection of stories written from the point of view of one of fictions greatest romantic heroes? Some stories are written in the first person and some aren't, but all of them give us a chance to get inside Darcy's head and witness the very monologues that give this fantastic book its title. Some are set in Regency times, some are set in other time periods including the American West and the 60s. The printed book was divided into two sections to reflect this.

Can I pick a favourite story? The answer is a resounding NO! As I read the book, reading in the order as printed, which starts with the Regency era, each new story immediately became my favourite. Then I thought to myself "No, that can't be! Each successive story simply can't be better than the last. They're all absolutely brilliant!" That hasn't changed on listening to the audio version. The stories vary in length and range from Darcy and Elizabeth overcoming their misunderstandings and falling in love as per canon, to Darcy reflecting on his forthcoming marriage, and to Darcy as an old man reflecting back on his marriage to Elizabeth. Then there's the stories set in more recent times such as the Old West, the 1960s and right up to date with Darcy as a Major League baseball player.

I'm not going to go into details about the individual stories - we'd be here all day! As a card-carrying Janeite, I love variations set in the original Regency era but I've also taken a fancy to variations set in other times, too.

This was one of the best JAFF books to come out last year and Harry Frost's narration adds a whole new sumptuous layer to that enjoyment, keeping me company on my commutes. In fact, I was often reluctant to get out of the car at the end of my journey. His Regency Darcy voice is simply to die for! In fact, all of his voice characterisations were fantastic. I've come across some male narrators whose female characters come across as...well "soppy", but that's definitely not the case here. I'm pretty sure Lady Catherine de Bourgh would simply refuse to put up with that!

So, if you're reluctant to try this book because it's an anthology, don't! Just. Don't. It'll be well worth the time you invest in it.

Fantastic stories; expertly performed

Harry Frost is an excellent narrator who really inhabits the characters. His accent range is excellent and he has the gift of making the listener believe he is the character he is narrating. I particularly appreciate his portrayal of the female characters which are clearly defined without resorting to a falsetto voice.

Excellent as the narration was, so was the writing. This is a class set of stories written by the best authors in the field.

I will listen to this again (and again and ....)
