About this listen

The goblins have killed all of our horses and most of our men.
They have enslaved our cities, burned our fields, and still they wage war.
Now, our daughters take up arms.

Galva - Galvicha to her three brothers, two of whom the goblins will kill - has defied her family's wishes and joined the army's untested new unit, the Raven Knights. They march toward a once-beautiful city overrun by the goblin horde, accompanied by scores of giant war corvids. Made with the darkest magics, these fearsome black birds may hold the key to stopping the goblins in their war to make cattle of mankind.

The road to victory is bloody, and goblins are clever and merciless. The Raven Knights can take nothing for granted - not the bonds of family, nor the wisdom of their leaders, nor their own safety against the dangerous war birds at their side.

But some hopes are worth any risk.

A fraught, shattering fantasy adventure, this standalone novel is set during the war-torn, goblin-infested years just before The Blacktongue Thief.©2024 Christopher Buehlman (P)2024 Orion Publishing Group Limited

Nostalgic momoir

If you're expecting this book to be similar to the Black tongues thief it is very different!

The perspective is like a nostalgia memoir looking at Galvas time in the Daughters war. We learn alot about the soft woman underneath her hard exterior.

personally I found it difficult to get into it but I'm glad I gave it my time as it is a lovely, lovely book.

The narration was excellent!

Fantastic book very well read, the accent suiting the character perfectly (just like the first book in the series)

A sequel to be proud of.

Yet again I am shocked at how good this writing is. The world building, the dialogue, the humour the darkness, it’s just great.

It might well be the best fantasy series I’ve read.

Like Terry Pratchett and Marlon James had a baby. With a Beak.

Fantastic prequel

Buehlman writes with such an easy, pragmatic grace. The world, despite its eerie magic and terrifying goblins, feels so real and desperate. Though the characters face grim challenges with proper consequences and rewards, there is real unforced humour in this story. A real treat of a listen, a few odd pauses within the recording which broke immersion once or twice is my only gripe. I see Buehlman becoming my favourite fantasy writer if he is not already.

amazing book, stellar narration

The audiobook is stellar, the narrator did a fantastic job conveying anger, grief and sorrow, and the couple songs here and there add a lot to the immersion.

Excellent expansion of his world

Great prequel in a fascinating universe with excellent world-building and witty, fluid prose. Sorely missing Buehlman's narration.

Worth your time!

Even though I thought I would miss Kinch, I didn’t. A beautiful expansion on the universe, and all the inner workings of Galva. I almost feel like going back to book 1 to re-experience that book with Galvas back story to add a new layer of understanding.
