Summary

From the Gemmell Award-winning author of THE VAGRANT, a thrilling new series of power, intrigue, and magic.

THE DEMONS

Creatures lurk in the endless forests of the Wild, plucking victims from those who scratch a living by the sides of the great Godroads, paths of crystal which provide refuge from the infernal tide.

THE DEATHLESS

Humanity’s protectors reign within crystal castles held aloft on magical currents – seven timeless royal families, born and reborn into flawless bodies. As immortal as the precious stones from which they take their names, they fight to hold the Wild at bay. For generations a fragile balance has held.

AND THE DAMNED…

House Sapphire, one of the ancient Deathless families, is riven by suspicion and grief. Their hunting expeditions against the Wild are failing and entire villages have begun to disappear.

Then, when assassins strike, House Sapphire shatters.

Promising start, great story, medicore narration

Having loved Peter Newmans Vagrant series. I couldn't wait to give this new one a listen.

It does seem to be, a tad more conventional storywise, than his previous Vagrant series. But the story still sucked me in.

There are, some similarities to his previous books, and once again his wonderful imagination has created some wickedly interesting, beasties and demons who all inhabit his world of Immortals, "The Deathless"
The Deathless reside in skycastles and play caretakers to the rest of humanity who eek out a living in settlements close to the God Road they are reliant upon The Deathless to keep them safe by keeping the demons at bay.

Great start to the series can't wait to see what direction it goes in.

Narration though I did struggle with. General story telling was fine, though there were few times I had to rewind as I didn't find her voice very engaging and had lost track of what was going on, this got better further into the story, guess I was getting used to her. Her character dialect parts were not the best. she made most of the characters sound as though they where whiney which got tedious, or they reminded of Pam Ayres! and that was pretty much how it was for all the characters little to differentiate between them Skyborn = whiney, the rest where Pam.

Another excellent tale from Newman

Wow this guy, what a writer another fascinating world to be brought into full of horror and mystery. If you liked The Vagrant and The Malice you'll love this too.

The narrator left a little to be desired, there was not much variation in voice between a lot of the characters and it took me a while to get comfortable listening, that being said once you are swept up in the story it becomes less noticeable.

overall an excellent listen, I would certainly recommend
