About this listen

Colorado, summer of 1880. Aurora McMullen, an orphan, has been left without family by her rich aunt's death. When the government seizes the small fortune given to her in the will, she takes a chance on her future and responds to a mail-order bride ad. Accustomed to a comfortable life in the city, she sets out to marry a man who defies her expectations and shows her the greatest riches come from the heart.

Elbridge Claywood, the doctor of Coal Valley, has been wanting to find a proper wife to share his home. A letter from his friend in Nashville helps him choose a volunteer nurse desperate to leave a bad situation. Always a gentleman, he marries this beautiful woman who brings warmth and hope into his lonely existence.

Together, they will discover they are destined for one another despite a good dose of homesickness and the rugged conditions of life in the west.

Aurora grew up with her aunt, who wasn’t a loving soul but who did provide her with many creature comforts. Aurora faithfully nursed her aunt until her death from cancer and was expecting an inheritance. Imagine her surprise when she learns that she did inherit half of her aunt’s estate but due to taxes owed, everything was confiscated by the government. Now Aurora is penniless and without options. When her best friend suggests that she answer the request for a doctor’s mail-order bride, Aurora hesitatingly agrees. But Coal Valley is a far cry from Nashville and what she’s been accustomed to...will Aurora give the small town, and its doctor, a chance?
Doctor Eldridge Claywood needed a wife so when his childhood friend in Nashville, referred him to Aurora, he is happy to offer her marriage. Can the good doc overcome Aurora’s insecurities and homesickness and prove that she’s capable of being loved? Sweet novella with a cute ending.

My first Rose Andrews book, and it is quick and sweet! I love novellas, and this mail order bride is a little different than most. I loved that it is not a cookie cutter story! Aurora comes to marry Elbridge after her aunt dies. She is a city girl, and comes to live with this doctor who not only is not the same class she was, but is the local doctor. With long hours, he is not home as much as she would like and the lifestyle is what she is used to. Will these two be able to find their happily ever after? Aurora proves to be an interesting character. While normally we find the bride falling in love with her new husband, this one gives us a look at what would happen if circumstances were not ideal. It's a fresh new take, I really enjoyed it.

Barbara Goldie gives a wonderful performance, as she brings this historical romance to life. It is my first narration by her and I enjoyed her pace and voices. I will be looking for more by her.

Rose Andrews’ The Doctor’s Mail-Order Bride was a pleasant novella. The characters were true to the time with Aurora and Elbridge’s relationship an honest depiction of the trials the real mail order brides and their husbands may have faced. I thought Barbara Goldie’s narration brought the characters to life and made the story very believable.
I was fortunate to receive this audiobook.
