Summary

Gianna believes manual labor to be penance for the mistake that changed her life. Nothing can be worse than serving probation under the supervision of a bitter, elderly woman, known as the Caretaker, running a bed and breakfast in the middle of the Arizona desert.

Then the strangers begin arriving. They appear every night at sundown at the end of the driveway and vanish early in the morning, armed men and women who don't quite look or act normal and never travel in vehicles, despite the property being 20 miles from town. Where they come from baffles Gianna, as does the single rule the Caretaker gives her. The front door must remain unlocked and the house accessible to the dangerous visitors no matter how unusual or frightening they are.

When one of them arrives wounded, Gianna helps save him and unknowingly makes a powerful friend, one from a very faraway place. In fact, from another world entirely, the world that starts at the end of the driveway. Before she can learn more, Gianna is left alone with the strangers and must choose whether she'll take over the Caretaker's role as hostess or return to New York and risk jail time for violating her probation.

Frustrated with her life, Gianna defies the Caretaker and locks the front door instead.

Her world will never be the same.

It was worth it

I am writing this review after I finished both parts. The first book was a bit slow for me, and quite YA. But it was intriguing enough for me to keep listening to second part, and it was so worth it, as it became much more interesting and storyline even more unpredictable. Definitely recommend to give it a chance!

Creative story

Gianna is sent out in the middle of nowhere to serve a probation sentence for a crime she committed in fear and desperation. You can't get more rustic than the desert bed and breakfast she is being forced to work in, under the strict supervision of the elderly Caretaker. The place looks ancient, a rundown mess of a place and it's Gianna's job to fix it up and do whatever the Caretaker tells her to do. There is no love lost between the two. Gianna begrudgingly performs her tasks and count's down the days until she is free to get back to her life in New York. It soon becomes apparent that everything about the B&B is weird.
When strange visitors start appearing seemingly out of nowhere, and the Caretaker remains tight-lipped, Gianna tries to find out what's really going on. However this leads her to make a crucial mistake she may regret for the rest of her life.

This is quite a unique, unassuming fantasy story which leaves on a cliff-hanger and boasts of much more to come. The narrator did fair work here, but wasn't great at portraying the African American woman Caretaker who was a major part of the story. The narrator didn't even try to do an accent and the character sounded more like a wicked witch than a wise elderly lady, which was disappointing. The audiobook was very slow paced, I turned up the speed to make for a more comfortable read. Despite the narration, this is definitely a book worth reading.

I was given this book for free of my own choosing and I voluntarily left this review.
