Summary
A Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, and Amazon Charts best seller.
From the best-selling author of The Beekeeper’s Promise comes a gripping story of three young women faced with impossible choices. How will history - and their families - judge them?
Paris, 1940. With the city occupied by the Nazis, three young seamstresses go about their normal lives as best they can. But all three are hiding secrets. War-scarred Mireille is fighting with the Resistance; Claire has been seduced by a German officer; and Vivienne’s involvement is something she can’t reveal to either of them.
Two generations later, Claire’s English granddaughter Harriet arrives in Paris, rootless and adrift, desperate to find a connection with her past. Living and working in the same building on the Rue Cardinale, she learns the truth about her grandmother - and herself - and unravels a family history that is darker and more painful than she ever imagined.
In wartime, the three seamstresses face impossible choices when their secret activities put them in grave danger. Brought together by loyalty, threatened by betrayal, can they survive history’s darkest era without being torn apart?

Very irritating narration
I’m in the first third and I’m struggling to keep listening due to the i irritating voices of the narrators. In particular the narrator speaking in the near to modern day. I can’t decide whether to keep going or finish by reading the book. Very unpleasant voices to listen to.

Odd intonation
I didn't enjoy the intonation style of the narrator for Harriet. Stress often placed incorrectly.

Good story
like the story and one of the narrators but the second narrator sounding like an electronic voice with no emotion. It sounded like I was listening at the wrong speed but no matter what speed it was awful narration. It spoiled a much anticipated book.

Good book
I found it started slow but once you got to know the wartime characters it became a lot more interesting. I feel Harriet was somewhat feeble and needed a bit more back bone. Apart from this I enjoyed the book

A good story of civilian life in wartime France
Very interesting to dip into the lives of the civilians sharing Paris with German troops throughout the war and the effects it had on their lives, particularly from a female perspective.
Only negative is that the narrator who reads the modern day sections of the book has a slightly annoying intonation to her voice.

Probably better to read rather than audio book?
I tried really hard to listen to this audible book.
Unfortunately the narrator's voice began to feel like grating on metal- I couldn't work out what was irritating me most, her tone or her style etc . Sorry , but that's how it was for me. I didn't get that narked in the sample. Potentially I think this would be a good story to read & I am very disappointed that I couldn't continue with it .

A very good book ruined by the narrators
The story was excellent and compelling but I absolutely hated both of the narrators. The accent of the younger reader was appalling and the older one sounded like she had something stuck in her throat. It really was impossible to listen to but I did stick it out because the story was good.
