About this listen
Now, Hemlock is being tricked into a hazardous assignment that involves an attempt to scale one of the most treacherous mountain peaks in the Swiss Alps: the Eiger. His target is one of his three fellow climbers. The problem is that the CII can't tell him which one.
This spine-tingling adventure, part thriller and part satire, introduces an intriguing cast of villains, traitors, and beautiful women into a highly charged atmosphere of danger and suspicion that builds to a death-defying climax.

A classic Trevanian
Picked this up as a freebie in the Audible Included catalogue. A classic. Perhaps bit dated now but still an enjoyable read.

Engrossing story
Kept me in the edge of my seat throughout. I felt as though I was up there on the mountain with Johnathon willing him on.

Great work
Joe Barrett narrated this fantastically, especially the voice of Bill.
The story was great and enjoyable, worked well despite it being written many years ago.
I did work it all out quite early on, but it didn't detract from it at all..

Black comedy
An espionage story set in the 1970’s. Well-paced, humorous, and well told. The characters may have an element of caricature but the slightly absurdist tone allows for this.

Great free book
Good old fashioned story, bit of a 007 vibe but with less misogyny. Good narration, the dodgy accents are forgivable.

Yes it’s sexiest and dates. But ….
Yes it’s sexiest and dates. But don’t listen if you get upset by this.
Notwithstanding this it’s a pretty good story which I think (hope?) written as a bit of tongue-in-cheek.

A decent adventure yarn if out of date and predictable
I read that the author was annoyed that the book wasn’t seen as a spoof as much as he’d like, and I can see why. You’ll get a little Bond-esque smut (Randy Knickers) but then all the action on the mountain is deadly serious.
There is an unlikely amount of sex which doesn’t add anything for the most part. References to race are mostly out of date and may be offensive, yet there’s a a decently strong black female character whose colour is (nicely) matter-of-fact.
I was engaged by the plot, especially the Eiger chapters which kept me hooked. It was rather predictable though.
The narration was pretty good with characters’ accents clearly distinguishable.
