Summary

When notorious millionaire banker Lars Anderson hangs himself from the old oak tree in front of his Kent mansion his death attracts no sympathy. But the legacy of a lifetime of self-serving is widespread, the carnage most acute amongst those he ought to be protecting: his family. Meanwhile, in a wealthy suburb of Glasgow, a young woman is found savagely murdered in her home. The genteel community is stunned by what appears a vicious, random attack. When DS Alex Morrow is called in to investigate, she soon discovers that behind the murder lurks a tangled web of lies. A web that will spiral through the local community, through Scotland and ultimately right back to a swinging rope hundreds of miles away.

Starts good but ends in rather a rush

Well read, appropriate voicing and nice to listen to. The strong starts well but the closing chapters seemed like a rushed finish.

An excellent listen

The internal dialogue of the characters was fascinating. Denise Mina is a superb writer and storyteller

Brilliant storytelling, good narration

Don't let anyone tell you this book isn't great - I've read it twice, listened to the audiobook once and I love it, and so does everyone I've ever lent it to. It's more of a why-dunnit than who-dunnit but the real point is that a wealthy upbringing is no substitute for love. I like the lead, DS Alex Morrow, but the real stars here are poor damaged Thomas and the no-nonsense but kind Kay. Mina's compassion for characters from under-privileged backgrounds is rare and wonderful. It's Denise Mina's best book to date and I can't recommend it enough.

A bit tedious with description

My first Mina book and probably my last. Too much time spent describing things so that one forgot the point of a scene. Things did not all knit together by the end, although that could be because I kept falling asleep.

Excellent narration

Great story, with clear, easy-to-follow narration. I wish other Denise Mina books were done by this narrator.

Good effort from Denise Mina

Would you consider the audio edition of The End of the Wasp Season to be better than the print version?

Possibly; Sally Armstrong read it very well.

Which character – as performed by Sally Armstrong – was your favourite?

Alex Morrow.

Any additional comments?

A very good novel, could be enjoyed as a stand alone story, though will probably make more sense if you've read Still Midnight.

Curiously opaque

After listening off and on for four hours I still have only the vaguest idea what it’s about. That’s not good. Not sure why this is but it is. And I don’t want to listen anymore. That said, the writing is proficient enough and the narration is fine. It’s just not very captivating. Probably my fault.
