Summary

Dr. Ross Greene, a distinguished clinician and pioneer in the treatment of kids with social, emotional, and behavioral challenges, has worked with thousands of explosive children, and he has good news: these kids aren't attentionseeking, manipulative, or unmotivated, and their parents aren't passive, permissive disciplinarians. Rather, explosive kids are lacking some crucial skills in the domains of flexibility/adaptability, frustration tolerance, and problem solving, and they require a different approach to parenting.

The Explosive Child is the highly acclaimed, lifechanging parenting guide in which Dr. Greene first delineated the Collaborative Problem Solving approach. Dr. Greene explains why kids exhibit challenging behaviors, why traditional behavior management strategies may not be effective for many kids, and how to use Plan B to solve problems collaboratively and teach your child the skills he or she is lacking.

As the model has evolved over the years, so has The Explosive Child, and it is available here in an abridged and updated fourth edition narrated by Dr. Greene.

Throughout this compassionate, insightful, and practical book, Dr. Greene provides a new conceptual framework for understanding their difficulties. He explains why traditional parenting and treatment often don't work with these children, and he describes what to do instead. Instead of relying on rewarding and punishing, Dr. Greene's Collaborative Problem Solving model promotes working with explosive children to solve the problems that precipitate explosive episodes, and teaching these kids the skills they lack.

A guide to getting along well

A second listen is necessary for me. It's simple and even obvious in one way but unfortunately it's not the usual approach to raising kids/sorting problems, so it'll take practice. Very clear, step by step approach . It's given me hope for less explosions and more understanding in my household.

basic reading if you're responsible for humans

I wanted to argue back with this book so much, then heard every argument taken to it's conclusion, then it's origin in some trauma. it asks you to avoid trying the impossible task of unlearning neural connections that already exist and offers the tools and practices to grow new ones that are going to give you the break you're desperate for

Insightfully written

Loved this clear; no-fuss; straight to the point book. The title is sumwhat misleading as it really can be used with all children.

Excellent

I have the book but this is great to listen to in the car and reflect on the content. I really wish I could make everyone read it and say, look, it's not just that I'm incapable of time outs & reward charts, or that I can't discipline my child & am not consistent. Very useful, life changing information and a different perspective. I would really recommend this book to all parents, not just those with an explosive child.

Great advice, for any parent. A must read!

I've often thought Plan A the imposing if an adults will on a child isn't the best approach. My third foray into parenting needs some adjustments and adaptations, because this third child is explosive.

I wish I'd had this knowledge before having my first, non explosive child three decades ago.

Really helpful

I liked the practical solutions and guidance as well as real life examples which are genuinely the same issues I have been facing as mother of explosive child. Good book.
