Summary

The house, for all of its solitude, seemed incredibly noisy.

The Farmhouse, having stood against time and history for nearly 160 years in the Virginia countryside, was forgotten and abandoned until Kyle and Jenny Dowling moved in during the summer of 1972. The Dowlings, married just a year, are struggling to repair their broken marriage. It was to be the perfect place, away from it all, to heal their relationship. Jenny would write, and Kyle would tend to minor renovations. The rent was cheap.

The realtor warned them, however, against staying beyond the final days of fall.

“No, it isn’t recommended you stay through the winter. Winter is a difficult time at The Farmhouse.”

But it was only summer and winter was a long way off."

An unsettling, cosy horror for those drizzly days

Very well written and beautifully descriptive. You can imagine every element of this story perfectly. A draughty house that needs renovation gives this couple a chance to have a low rent property which also gives Jenny space for her to write her book, while the Kyle, the husband she hates, focuses on the renovations after losing his job. But the locals appear to have a secret. They encourage the couple to leave before winter and are very off with the couple moving in. An unsettling, cosy horror for those drizzly days and gloomy nights

A creepy, vivid story! Ideal for Halloween

The Farmhouse is a creepy and well narrated short story which really gave me the chills.
The book follows Jenny and Kyle who have moved away to this secluded farmhouse to start afresh in their marriage. Kyle had an affair and they are trying to heal and move forward together.
They are given warnings to not stay at the Farmhouse in the winter but they just shrug off the warnings, even though people seem quite insistent.
Jenny is writing a book and finds herself losing time and the book having been added to without her knowledge of writing the text she had written. Spooky things keep happening and I found myself looking round the room as I listened to this tale unfold.
This is perfect if you live spooky stories and the description of the Farmhouse brings it up so vividly in your mind!
