Summary

As the Cold War faded into history, it appeared to have been replaced by a new conflict - between Islam and the West. Or so we are told. After the events of 9/11 and the advent of the 'war on terror', this narrative seemed prophetic. But, as Peter Oborne reveals in this masterful new analysis, the concept of an existential clash between the two is a dangerous and destructive fantasy.

Based on rigorous historical research and forensic contemporary journalism that leads him frequently into war-torn states and bloody conflict zones, Oborne explains the myths, fabrications and downright lies that have contributed to this pernicious state of affairs. He shows how various falsehoods run deep, reaching back as far as the birth of Islam, and have then been repurposed for the modern day. Many in senior positions in governments across the West have suggested that Islam is trying to overturn our liberal values and even that certain Muslims are conspiring to take over the state, while Douglas Murray claims in his new book that we face a 'War on the West'. But in reality, these fears merely echo past debates, as we continue to repeat the pattern of seemingly wilful ignorance.

With murderous attacks on Muslims taking place from Bosnia in 1995 to China today, Oborne dismantles the falsehoods that lie behind them, and he opens the way to a clearer and more truthful mutual understanding that will benefit us all in the long run.

Critic reviews

'Oborne has taken up the unpopular cause of British Muslims, who feel misrepresented by politicians and the newspapers... The popular idea that there is a "clash of civilsations" between the West and Islam has resulted in failed wars abroad and shameful persecution at home... His analysis of the web of think tanks, politicians and journalists shaping the narrative around British Muslims is certainly eye-opening.' (Sameer Rahim)
'There is plenty of interesting material here. Most readers will probably not realise that the American navy was created as a response to the depredations of “Barbary” pirates in the early 19th century. The heart, however, of Oborne’s book...represents an admirable piece of sustained investigative journalism. For those interested in the malign impact of Islamophobia in Britain, [the book] genuinely breaks new ground and deserves to be widely read and debated.' (Dr Philip Lewis)

An Eye Opener

I found this book extremely (not extremist) educational. It has added to my knowledge of this subject, which has been made complex by groups you wouldn’t expect. Unfortunately on reading you begin to loose faith in the Britain and politicians you thought you knew

A great read! Well researched!

The only thing I’d say is Islam is a religion and not a culture. Writers need to make this distinction more clear.

I simply cannot recommend this book highly enough

It's an absolute must for anyone who ever thought negatively about Islam or Muslims. The depth of reporting. The deconstruction and investigation into such aspects as "Muslim grooming gangs" and Birmingham schools "Trojan horse" are simply mind blowing. The lengths some people, states and organisations are going to, in order to destroy Islam is unbelievable, and can only make me conclude there's something about Islam they fear. A religion that has been so battered over decades is still the fast growing religion. Muslim's have not abandoned their religion like others. People are converting to Islam. There's something these shadowy characters fear, and now I'm interested to find out what it is. The author has done an outstanding job.

Exceptionally Revealing and informative

I have read and listened to so many books, but a book so detailed, well researched and accurate is very rare to find. I couldn't recommend this book enough, whatever you do, please take time out of your busy schedule to read this book to educate and inform yourself.

Excellent

Excellent in-depth analysis to counterbalance the likes of Douglas Murray's Strange Death of Europe and other books on the same subject.

Interesting read. A deep look at the hypocrisy of western governments towards Islam

A really interesting listen on the hypocrisy of the west towards Islam. Particular focus on governments and the media. Covers the US, France and the U.K. and I’d consider it an intro rather than a deep dive, but I found it very interesting and wanting to read more

the birth of knowledge

take this as you will.
be aware of your own bias, before hand.
wrestle with the ideas you hold to be true.
Continue to question and think. Be aware of the nature of your own thinking. Take note of your own discrimination both positive and negative.

Excellent and challenging book

I have been impressed by other books by this author and was interested to see what he had to say on this subject. It was very informative, well researched and rather disturbing. It is always good to keep challenging our received ideas and to be prepared to think carefully about things we have heard about other people, many of which can often be wrong.
