Summary

Something is terrifying the residents of St. Luke’s Orphanage. Gurgling moans echo through the hallways. Hulking shapes lurk in the surrounding woods. And those who wake in the morning will find one less child under their roof....

Brandon and his girlfriend, Jillian, believe his younger brother is in serious danger. Even though the caretakers at St. Luke’s told them that he’s been adopted, Brandon has his doubts. With the help of a friend and a mysterious guide, they will do whatever it takes to find out just what is happening inside the orphanage walls...and at the bottom of the basement steps....

From Splatterpunk Award-winning author Wesley Southard and Splatterpunk Award-nominated author Lucas Mangum comes The Final Gate, the ultimate tribute to Italian horror master Lucio Fulci. With blood, guts, and all the nightmarish madness you’d expect from the Godfather of Gore himself, Southard and Mangum present a loving homage to spaghetti splatter and the glory of 1980s Euro horror.

A horrible orphanage!

Brandon‘s brother is at St. Luke’s orphanage or at least that’s where he was supposed to be until the day they told him he was adopted he is a recovering alcoholic but on that day his girlfriend gave him a free pass to have a drink that didn’t is the pain of not knowing where his brother was but when he goes to look for him and he too goes missing it’s left up to Jillian and her dog smell to find him with the help of a strange older man named Claudius in a story about the supernatural and gates to hell well she even come close to finding the man she loves. This book was so good it’s a real throwback to 80s horror but not splatter punk as it has a great plot and great narration. Shawn Dregger is one of my favorite narrators I think if he read the phonebook I would be down for listening. Please forgive any mistakes as I am blind to dictate my review but trust me when I say if you love horror then you love the final gate by Wesley Southard.

Relentlessly Entertaining Italian-style Gorefest

Wesley Southard and Lucas Mangum are two of the most exciting new writers in horror. When I heard that they were continuing the fictional universe that Lucio Fulci started, I knew that the result would be something very special. It's instantly clear that they are both fans of Fulci's work and there are lots of little nods and references to films like Zombie, City of the Living Dead, The Beyond and The House by the Cemetery. You don't need to have seen these films to enjoy this audiobook, but it will add more depth to the experience if you have.
I read The Final Gate the week that it was released but decided to revisit it when I found out Sean Duregger was narrating the audiobook version. His recent work on the Wishmaster official adaptation was insanely good and I was interested to see what he'd do with the material. He is a very natural storyteller whose subtle character work always keeps you in the story. I particularly liked the voice he did for the miserable old grandmother. The additional music was also a nice touch.
Highly recommended.
