Summary

Born at the beginning of the 20th century, Raphael Ignatius Phoenix is determined to take his own life as the new millennium begins and he turns 100 years old. But before he ends it all, he wants to get his affairs in order, and that includes making sense of his own life. He decides to write it down, remembering the experiences, the myriad encounters and, of course, the 10 murders he committed along the way.

Enjoyable if frustrating!

Long, a tad frustrating and with a narrator that sort of gets on your nerves. Overall, worth not giving up on!

absolutely fantastic

a great book. so different from anything else. I think I may have to listen again before I start searching Google for theories on this book... I have an idea but may be completely wrong... truly fantastic book that will stay with me forever. I highly recommend you read or listen to this book ( the narrator for this Audible copy is superb bringing life and feeling and humour perfectly)

What a treat!

This book is just wonderful - an utter treat.

it's the life story of Raphael Ignatius Phoenix, and what a life he had racketing about the world murdering people as he went! It's written with great humour and is just the most fabulous romp. There is something of the flavour of the Flashman books about it - I think because our hero is so terribly frank with his reader - warts and all.
I loved it, I didn't want it to end. It was funny and strangely uplifting for a story of murder!
I can't leave without mentioning the performance - utterly brilliant! Gordon Griffin really brings the text alive.
Highly recommended all round.

Lovely surprise

Initially I wondered if I would enjoy this story but as you get to hear the main characters story you start to like him in a strange way and become intrigued by his life. There is a little bit if swearing throughout but it is the character and so never seems out of place. By the end I was quite attached to the old chap and was pleased with the story's conclusion.

One of the best audiobooks I’ve purchased!

An amazing, unique and darkly hilarious novel. I couldn’t wait to keep listening to it, but didn’t want it to end! The first two thirds were the best, and the ending is a little nuts, but on the whole, it was a delight! :)

Not nearly as smart or funny as it thinks itself.

The basic conceit of the book is fine but I've seldom heard or read a story which so desperately needs the hand of a good editor to weed out the flabby verbiage and keep the narrative inconsistencies to a minimum. It passed the time but far too much of it; at about half the length it could have kept all the plot without the tedious meandering. A pity, because there's a wryly amusing tale in there but this feels like a first rather than final draft.
