About this listen

Helen Kent never dares to step outside her comfort zone. She lives a lonely, mundane life in the city, grinding through her uninspiring marketing job. That is, until a spontaneous online purchase brings her to the little bay town of Oban, Scotland, where a 500-year-old cottage full of secrets and stories awaits her.

After Helen unearths the local legend of a 16th-century witch, she discovers a set of mysterious journals in the cottage’s library. Thrust into a world of magic she doesn’t understand, she soon realizes there are both light and dark forces at work beyond her control.

With the help of a dashing Scottish neighbor and his wise grandfather, Helen discovers the link that connects her to the mysterious events unfolding at the cottage. But when the past collides with the present, she must face her fears and fight for what she believes in—that is if she hopes to unravel the mystery of Fernbeg cottage before darkness descends, again.

sorry but the voice telling this story is terrible it almost made me not listen to this book

terrible voice

I had to give up listening because the narrator pronounced “Oban” and Loch Lomond” ridiculously. This was distracting enough in the English and American accents but impossible to listen to in the voice of the Scottish characters. It would be understandable if these were obscure place names (though still annoying), but they are top tourist destinations and central locations to the story!

Narrator could not pronounce basic location names

Didn't want it to end! Great story, audible listen was captivating. Huge fan of Paula Brackston and this was just as delicious! Highly recommended

A perfect Halloween witchy read!

Ugh, never judge a book by its beautiful cover. This is a generous 3 stars on this one. The premise of the story was so interesting but there is absolutely no heart in the writing and, from reading a few other reviews, that’s probably because the author relied on AI to help her write the story. The dialogue is meh, I cannot see the point of the prologue, which I probably enjoyed more than the rest of the book and wolves do not bark like a dog. Not reflected in the rating, but I made the huge mistake of listening to the audiobook of this title. The pronunciation of Oban and Loch Lomond were extremely jarring. My book choices this month are so disappointing :(

Some of the narration is painful

I thought this would be a good cosy read after a heavy read. As a native Scot, I was waiting for her to arrive in Scotland and be corrected on her pronunciations, but no. Being honest I didn't even make it an hour in because it was insufferable. Even her description of Oban was completely false. Nah, I just couldn't. I can power through for authors that have clearly done their research but maybe get a thing or two wrong, but this was ridiculous.

TERRIBLE narration
