About this listen

The second in the thrilling fantasy series returning readers to the Six Duchies and the magical world of the Farseers, from the author of the bestselling Assassin’s Apprentice.

Fitz has succeeded in rescuing Prince Dutiful from the clutches of the Piebald rebels, and has returned with him to Buckkeep castle. With Dutiful safe again, Queen Kettricken can proceed with plans to marry him to the Outislander princess, Elliania, but with tensions building among the peoples of the Six Duchies over Kettricken’s tolerance of the Wittted, even Buckkeep is no longer safe. A reluctant Fitz is assigned to protect the young prince, and also train him in the Skill, and in doing so he finally makes contact not only with his estranged daughter, Nettle, but with someone in Buckkeep who may possess a greater Skill talent than Fitz. And who may represent a terrible threat to the Farseers. Meanwhile, Elliania arrives, and before she will accept Prince Dutiful’s betrothal challenges him to undertake an impossible quest. He must kill a legendary Outislander dragon.

Great book, terrible editing

I really enjoyed this audiobook. It's a wonderful story and I liked Nick Taylor's performance a great deal. However the editing is incredibly poor - too short cuts at ends of chapters, some sections repeated, some parts (including the end of the epilogue!) missed out altogether. A recut version of this would be great if that is possible.

Great book overall

But why Queen Kettricken has a french accent?? Makes no sense and the narrator makes it sounds so very annoying, terrible choise in my opinnion.

Unspeakably brilliant

So very good. Many epic fantasy series tail off in quality after a few books, but not so this one. This is the 2nd book back in Buck with Fitz after three books with the Live Ships, and I am still completely gripped.

I have to acknowledge the narrator as well as the amazing author: it is SO good not to be distracted by weird pronunciations and diction after the teeth-clenching awfulness of the 1st three books. It took a short while to get used to the change in name pronunciation, but they actually are truer to the spellings this way.

Thank you for another exceptional instalment. On to the next!

Love the series but editing issues noted

The amount of errors in this series (Tawny Man) is concerning and frustrating. There are repeated lines - obviously where the narrator has tried different expressions - but this hasn't been edited out on multiple occasions. One other issue I have is the speed and volume of the Chapter change announcement.

Stirling work!

Another book featuring Fitz and the beloved Fool, it stirs up emotion and left this listener eager to hear the next part!

Gold standard voice work as usual!

At last a narrator worthy of the novel

After strange choices of narrator off the first two trilogies it is a pleasure to have one who flows with the story. Its not that he does anything special but like a football referee has a good game if you don't notice them so it is here. Very enjoyable listen.

Worth a listen

Entire book was a bit sad (dark) from beginning to end. Beautifully written. Left with a feeling of foreboding at the end of it all.

Tom badgerkock whines like a teenager

Loved these books, but this time round I found myself getting irritated with tom badgerlock constant teenage esque angst. Found myself getting annoyed rather than enjoying the plot. Also as a male I found the depiction somewhat sexist.
